IJN Taiyo Class Escort Aircraft Carrier
The Taiyo class aircraft carriers consisted of three Nippon Yusen Kabushiki passenger liners, the Kasuga Maru, Nitta Maru, and the Yawata Maru, which were converted into carriers in 1941 and 1942. The three were equipped with a 564 foot 3 inch flight deck and were lightly armed, though they were provided with more armaments as time passed. The carriers were used primarily as training vessels until the end of the war when all three were sunk by the American submarines Rasher, Barb, and Sailfish.
