IJN Notoro Seaplane Carrier

The Notoro was laid down originally as a Shiretoko class oiler in 1919, but in 1924 the decision was made to convert her into a seaplane carrier. She was equipped with derricks to move the seaplanes, which were then stowed underneath a light platform constructed over the well deck of the ship. Interestingly, the Notoro was converted back into an oiler in 1942 and remained in that capacity until 1947 when she was scrapped.
