Crystal Maze 2 ROCKS

On 23 April 2024, the Indian Air Force achieved a milestone by successfully test-firing an air-launched ballistic missile, ROCKS or Crystal Maze 2, capable of hitting targets over 250 kilometers away. The test launch confirmed the missile's operational effectiveness and its integration with new technologies. The missile, capable of striking targets over 250 kilometers away, was launched from a Su-30 MKI fighter jet in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The test was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command. Preparations were made in the area falling under the tri-services Andaman and Nicobar Command, currently headed by an Air Force officer. The successful test validated the operational capability of the Command and new technologies.

The Crystal Maze 2 is an extended stand-off range air-to-surface missile of Israel’s origin. It is designed to strike high-value stationary and relocatable targets, such as long-range radars and air defense systems. The missile is effective in GPS-denied environments, similar to conditions faced during the Kargil War. It can penetrate areas protected by air defense systems. Crystal Maze 2, also known as ROCKS, is an Israeli-developed air-launched medium-range ballistic missile.

The missile has a strike range of over 250 kilometers. It's designed to target high-value assets, such as air defense systems and long-range radars, of potential adversaries. It can neutralize enemy long-range radar and air defense systems, and eliminate above-ground or heavily fortified underground targets. It's designed for GPS-denied environments, making it crucial for operations in challenging terrains.

The IAF aims to procure the missile in large numbers under the Make in India initiative. This move highlights India's dedication to achieving self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing. The successful test marks a major boost to the IAF’s capabilities. Plans are underway to acquire the Israeli missiles in large numbers through the Make in India initiative. The missile provides India with a unique capability to strike distant targets from the air.

The Crystal Maze 2 is a different missile from the previously inducted Crystal Maze 1 in the IAF. While both are of Israeli origin, the Crystal Maze 2 has extended range and enhanced capabilities. The missile, fired from a Su-30 fighter, initially travels upwards before moving towards its target at high speeds. The successful test of the Crystal Maze 2 air-launched ballistic missile by the Indian Air Force marks a significant boost to India’s military capabilities and strike options.
