Andhra Pradesh - Background

Andhra Pradesh situated in the southern part of India is the fifth largest state and was formed on 1st November 1956. It has longest coast line (972 km) among all states in India. The state is bounded by Tamil Nadu in the south, Karnataka and Maharashtra in west and Chhattisgarh and Odisha in the north. Hyderabad is the state capital. Andhra Pradesh is the seventh most populous state in the country.

Andhra Pradesh has always been the seat for mini ancient dynasties which is why it is called as the state of rich heritage, beautiful temples and culture. Andhra is often referred to as the food bowl of the south. Apart from its ancient history, the state has always been in light for its diverse and amazing landscapes.

The new capital city of Andhra pradesh is proposed in Guntur District, north of Guntur City and will be developed under Capital Region Development Authority. In accordance with the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, Hyderabad will remain the de jure capital of both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states for a period of time not exceeding 10 years.

Amaravati holds out the promise of being a city like no other in India. Among the innovative features on the drawing board are navigation canals around the city and connecting an island in the river Krishna. These have been embedded into the design of the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, a state that was left with no capital after Telangana inherited Hyderabad three years ago amid bitter rivalry. Amaravati is being built on a 217 sq km open field in Guntur district.

Andhra Pradesh has some really attractive and picturesque spots for the tourists. Apart from the landscape, major historical monuments are also tourist attractions. The most famous among them are Golconda fort, Char Minar, Mecca masjid,Falaknuma Palace,Chowmahalla Palace. The capital of the state itself is a unique location as it is a twin city-Hyderabad and Secunderabad.Andhra Pradesh has lots of famous temples too like Bhadrachalam Temple, Thousand Pillar Temple.Kuntala Waterfall and Bhongir Fort in Hyderabad attract visitors from all over the world.

Andhras observe many feasts and festivals. Most of them have some religious significance; but they are notable mainly for the occasion for gaiety and merry making they provide. On such days every household is decorated with floral and green leaf torana hung across the windows and doors. The courtyard is decorated tastefully with designs of muggu powder (rangoli) and the doorsteps are painted with daubs of turmeric and kumkum pastes. Dhoop sticks and dhup, sambrani are burnt in all the homes and the air is filled with aromatic smell. People wear new clothes; the lady of the house cooks special dishes and generally some community function is held near the village temple or at a common place. There are nine major festivals observed by Andhras; seven of them religious and two agricultural.
