TRJ628

The TRJ628 features a higher seating capacity, up to double that of the 328, and also leverages the IP, assets, investments and experience of all parties involved in the partnership. The TRJ628 will be Turkeys first domestically-designed and produced regional jet. Parallel with the manufacturing of the TRJ328 and T328 aircraft, with a seating capacity of 32, the Project includes the future design and certification of new higher capacity TRJ628 jet and TR628 turboprop aircraft, with a proposed passenger seating capacity up to double that of the TRJ328. These unique aircraft fill a niche market for direct and frequent flights between small cities in Turkey that are currently not feasibly serviced with larger airplanes. Thus, the Project provides a new avenue for both business and leisure travel within Turkey.

First the 328 will be used as base for the future indigenious TRJ628. The design of a new high-tech product, the 628 aircraft series, will start simultaneously with production of the 328 series. Parallel with the manufacturing of the TRJ328 and T328 aircraft, with a seating capacity of 32, the Project includes the future design and certification of new higher capacity TRJ628 jet and TR628 turboprop aircraft, with a proposed passenger seating capacity up to double that of the TRJ328. These unique aircraft fill a niche market for direct and frequent flights between small cities in Turkey that are currently not feasibly serviced with larger airplanes. Thus, the Project provides a new avenue for both business and leisure travel within Turkey.

The aircraft for the Project will be built and certified at a new commercial production facility in Turkey using significant investments by SNC. These modern facilities, coupled with the high-tech, commercial aeronautics technology developed by SNC and Turkish engineers under the Project, will contribute to the aviation and aerospace industry in Turkey.

Fairchild Dornier took a family approach to developing a new various regional jet aircraft. To remain competitive and meet market demands of regional airlines, Fairchild Dornier adopted the strategy of developing a family of new aircraft. The last series of aircraft under development by the company began with the 70-passenger 728JET, which was scheduled to enter service in 2003. This aircraft was to be followed by the 50-passenger 528JET in 2004 and the 100-passenger 928JET in 2005. These plans came to nothing.

The TRJ628 [a number missing in the original Dornier sequence] with 60 to 70 seats, represents something of a revival of the 70-passenger 728JET. By far the most significant difference is the fact that there was no turboprop counterpart to the Dornier 728JET, while the TRJ628 jet has a counterpart TR628 turboprop aircraft. And the Dornier 728JET was a low wing design, optimal for passenger use at improved landing fields, while the TR628/TRJ628 family is a high wing design, more suited to military applications and rough field operations.

It was claimed that with the Do 328 as base Turkish industry will gain about 9 years lead in development. The indigenous Turkish jet will come in four variants: a TRJ-328 jet and TR-328 turboprop, each with 32 seats, and a TRJ-628 jet and TR-628 turboprop, each with 60 to 70 seats. The TRJ328 and the TRJ628 will be based on the Dornier 328 and Dornier 628, respectively. The Turkish militarys headquarters is preparing to place its first orders for indigenous Turkish regional jets that are currently under construction, defense procurement officials said 08 December 2015. They said the Turkish General Staff will place the orders with the defense procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), but they did not specify the quantities in the first order. One official said the military orders would be for both models of the planned regional jet, the TRJ328 and the TRJ628. The military is planning the TRJ328 for personnel transport and intelligence purposes and the TRJ628 for cargo transport operations.
