Antonov AN-158 / New Regional Passenger Jet
An-158, modification of the regional jet An-148, was originally named An-148-200. Over 200 companies from 15 countries participated in the creation of the An-148. The new An-158 has more passenger seats, its passenger cabin is 2.5 meters longer, overhead storage bins are larger in volume, and its wings are modernized while fuel consumption and maintenance expenses are smaller. The plane can fit up to 99 passengers, but depending on the wishes of the client the passenger capacity may be decreased to 12 seats. The fuel consumption of the new model is 9% lower, and maintenance expenses are 12% lower. The jet has a capability to land in any weather conditions on any runway strips, including unpaved. The plane has a ramp door and can do without airport mobile ramps.
The An-158 is a stretched variant of the 85-seat An-148 regional jet with a payload of 99 passengers. It has an increased takeoff weight of 43.7 tons and a maximum range of 2,500 km. The AN-158 regional jet is intended to carry up to 99 passengers. It is designed on a basis of AN-148 regional jet. The AN-158 has high commonality with its predecessor, in particular, they have common main systems, engines, cockpit and flight control system, MRO, flight crew training system. Comfort level of these airplanes’ cockpits corresponds to the most modern airliners, their characteristics and safety level meets current and prospective world standards and requirements.
Embodying the best parameters of the basic aircraft, the AN-158 can fly:
- by day and night all year round under simple and complicated weather conditions;
- under ambient air temperatures at ground from -55C to +45C;
- at high-elevated airfields;
- under conditions of high latitudes (up to 780 of northern latitude)
- on the international air routes.
Core differences of the AN-158 include:
- 1.7 m longer fuselage;
- enlarged to 5m³ volume of over-head baggage lockers;
- modified layout of the fuselage tail section;
- improved design of wing;
- fuel consumption decreased by 9% per one passenger;
- DOC decreased by 12%.
The AN-158 in a basic version can carry up to 99 passengers over a range up to 2500 km (in one-class layout of the passenger cabin), or 89 passengers over a range up to 3100 km (in two-class layout of the passenger cabin) with a speed of 870 km/h. Twelve layouts of aircraft passenger cabin were certified.
The AN-158 performed its maiden flight on April 28, 2010. By the beginning of 2011, ANTONOV completed wide program of the aircraft certification. On February 28, 2011, the aircraft received Certificates issued by Interstate Aviation Committee and State Aviation Administration of Ukraine. They confirm the aircraft compliance with requirements of AP-25 harmonized with FAR-25 and CS-25.
Having completed the program of the certification tests AN-158 started trials on widening the operational conditions. In February 2011, the AN-158 performed 16 flights in Iran and proved its ability to be operated from/to elevated airfields at a height of 2200 m above sea level.
On November 21, 2013 the AN-158 regional jet completed tests on high- level airdromes of Latin America. The ground and flight tests confirming possibility of operation of the AN-158 family in conditions of high mountains with basing on airdromes situated on 4000m above sea level were performed within the limits of this program in full volume. Tests were carried out in airports of Latakunga, Ecuador (2800m above sea level) and La Paz, Bolivia (4000m above sea level).
The AN-158 takes a respectable place in the row of modern regional airplanes. ANTONOV Company and the Ilyushin Finance (IFC) Russian Leasing Company have already signed firm contracts for delivery of twenty An-158. ANTONOV grants a broad package of warranties on operation and after-sale support of the aircraft, including its reliability, maintenance content, flight regularity, performance and service life warranties and this is a distinctive feature of the agreement signed on June 21, 2011 at the Paris Airshow.
On April 2013 the AN-158 was put into operation to Cubana de Aviacion (Cuba). At present, this operator fleet numbers three such airplanes. In whole, the aircraft operators from Russia, Ukraine, countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America expressed their intention to purchase about 100 AN-158s. Serial production of the AN-158 is launched at ANTONOV Serial Plant. 215 enterprises of 15 countries are involved into cooperation on the aircraft construction.
On the basis of the AN-158 a row of new aircraft can be developed. It can include VIP versions, freighters and special-purpose airplanes for civil and military transport aviation.
President Viktor Yanukovych visited the Antonov ASTC, where in his presence the company test-flew the new AN-158 for the first time and transferred the commissioning act for AN-148 to the state company "Aerosvit" on 28 April 2010. The President and those present were shown the experimental model of AN-158 and watched the two planes take off. Congratulating everybody on this landmark event, the President noted that it was "the festival of Ukrainian aircraft building”. He thanked all those who contributed to developing and manufacturing of the new AN-158 and AN-148 and expressed confidence that these models will surely be popular with airways of different states of the world.
Viktor Yanukovych noted that in the development of the new aircrafts, 37 Ukrainian, 130 Russian and almost 30 other countries’ enterprises were involved. "Certainly, this program is economically beneficial, and it is the evidence that Ukraine is a highly developed country which has strong science, technology and capabilities," he said. The President also informed that his talks with our partners, especially Russia, give great hope that Ukraine will step forward in aircraft building. "We must use our potential," he said.
Antonov chief Dmitry Kiva said that the price of An-158 will be in the range of $27-$30 million depending on configuration. Within the period of 12-15 years Ukrainian and Russian aircraft designers intend to assemble 250 units of An-148/158. "As an option we are discussing assembly of An-148 in Voronezh, and An-158 in Kiev", Kiva said. "We have orders and now we are preparing contracts. Next year we are planning to supply 10 units to the clients," he added.
According to the data provided by the company, the portfolio of firm orders and pre-contract agreements for An-158 already included over 20 units. “We have firm orders for 10 planes from “Atlant-Soyuz” company, as well as letter of intent for 25 units of An-158,” said the Alexander Rubtsov, the general director. “We expect to have orders for 100-120 planes in the future, like in case with An-148,” he added. The plane certification was to be completed in the first quarter of 2011.
Russian leasing company Ilyushin Finance signed on 20 July 2010 a contract to purchase 10 An-158 planes from Ukraine's Antonov aircraft holding company with an option to buy 10 more, the companies said. Under the deal, which was concluded at the Farnborough International Air Show near London, the planes will be supplied in 2011-2013. The head of the Ukrainian Motor Sich engine manufacturer said at Farnborough that Russia will start the production of the An-158 passenger jet in 2011.
The Company “Ilyushin Finance Co (IFC) on 09 July 2012 signed a sale and purchase contract on delivery in Panama 15 Ukrainian-Russian regional jets of the new generation An-148 and An-158. The amount of the contract is estimated at $ 420 million. IFC will make the seller of the aircraft and the organizer of the financing transaction, and the Panamanian company is the lessor of equipment for airlines, the Caribbean and Africa. “The Russian legislation is different from the West. Due to certain discrepancies we can not work with leasing directly, so and found a partner in Panama”, – explained the press-Secretary of the IFC Andrey lypovetskiy.
“This is the first solid contract in the framework of our agreement with the “Antonov” for the delivery of 20 An-158, where there are end buyers. While we are the exclusive recipient of these aircraft to the Ukrainian plant”, – has noted Andrey lypovetskiy. The contract provides for delivery in Panama the first three aircraft An-158 in the course of three months, starting in December 2012. On these vessels already claimed the Latin American airline, explained in IFC. After that, in 2013-2014, should be put five An-158 and seven An-148.
