Mihai-Viorel Fifor From January 16 to January 29, 2018 Mihai-Viorel Fifor was appointed interim Prime Minister of Romania. Mihai Viorel Fifor, aged 47, was appointed interim prime minister by Klaus Iohannis. Fifor was Minister of Defense and Economy. Prime Minister Mihai Tudose announced his resignation at the end of the PSD National Executive Committee meeting, which lasted more than five hours. 60 of those who participated in the meeting voted to withdraw the political support of Mihai Tudose, four were against and four abstained.

Mihai-Viorel Fifor was born on May 10, 1970, in Drobeta Turnu Severin. He has a BA in Letters and History from the University of Craiova (1994), a MA in Romanian Literature (1995) and a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology (Magna Cum Laude) from the same University (2003). He has also obtained in 2003 a MA in Public Institution Management from the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest. In 2009 he attended the Internal Affairs Management courses of the National College of Internal Affairs, and the Security and Good Governance courses of the National Defense College, both in Bucharest. In 2014 and 2015 Mr. Fifor has attended the courses of the Romanian Diplomatic Institute, concentrated on the international security, foreign policy and diplomacy.

From 1994 to 2002, he was a Senior Research Scientist at the Romanian Academy’s “C.S. Nicolaescu-Plopsor” Social Studies Research Institute in Craiova, and from 2001 to 2005 he was a Research Scientist and Director of the Dolj “Regional Center for Conservation and Promotion of Traditional Culture” in Craiova. From 2005 to January 2009, and subsequently, from October 2009 to 2012, he served as General Manager of the “Oltenia” Museum in Craiova. Since 2003, he has been an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Craiova.

In 2009, Fifor was appointed Secretary of State in the Ministry of Administration and Interior (MAI), (from January to October 2009), when he became Secretary of State at the MAI (Victor Ponta Government, from May to December 2012), which he held until the December elections.

The political career of Mihai-Viorel Fifor includes positions such as Senator of the Romanian Parliament (since 2012, as a member of the Social Democratic Party).

In March 2014, Fifor was elected chairman of the parliamentary commission of inquiry on land from Nana (Calarasi County). A year later, in March 2015, the Senator was heard at the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, as a witness, in the case where MP Gabriela Firea accused former President Traian Basescu of blackmail, the prosecution of the latter being ordered in April 2014 by the Supreme Court Prosecutor's Office but suspended until the end of the term of office on 21 December.

Fifor was chairman of the Committee on Transport and Energy but is also a member of the Joint Special Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for Romania's accession to the Schengen area in July 2013. In February 2013, he was elected alternate member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He was appointed Minister of Economy (from June to September 2017). On 12 September 2017, he was appointed Minister of National Defense.
