PZL Mielec

PZL [Polskie Zaklady Lotnicze - Polish Aviation Works] is an abbreviation name used by three Polish aerospace manufacturers. Before 1939 it was one manufacturer Panstwowe Zaklady Lotnicze - State Aviation Works, based in Warsaw, Poland. Presently PZL Mielec is a Sikorsky Aircraft Company, PZL-Swidnik is an AgustaWestland company, and PZL "Warszawa-Okecie" ia an EADS Military company.

Polskie Zaklady Lotnicze Sp. z o.o. PZL Mielec - A Sikorsky Aircraft Company - is the biggest Polish manufacturer of aircraft, currently expanding its production profile to include aerostructures and helicopters. With its manufacturing tradition rooted in fixed-wing aircraft production, the Mielec Facility is building its new capacity in helicopter manufacture. On March 16, 2007, 100% of the shares of Polskie Zaklady Lotnicze Sp. z o.o. were purchased from ARP S.A. by United Technologies Holdings S.A. (UTH), a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (UTC). The new era was initiated not only in the history of Mielec aviation industry but also in the history of the company itself. As a part of UTC, PZL initiated cooperation with Sikorsky Aircraft Coporation a world leader in helicopter production, including the UH-60 BLACK HAWK, S-76 and S-92 models.

The current product line includes:

  • M28 a turbo-prop, twin-engine, STOL class (short takeoff & landing) aircraft designed for passenger and/or cargo transportation, paradrop, medical evacuation, marine reconnaissance and patrol flights, and Search & Rescue missions.
  • M28B Bryza - the military version of the M28 model, designed for special operations (depending on configuration)M18 Dromader a single-engine aircraft used in agricultural, fire fighting and forest protection operations
  • S-70i BLACK HAWK - multitask helicopter for international markets
  • UH-60M BLACK HAWK Cabins, the major structural assembly used to build the Sikorsky UH-60M BLACK HAWK Helicopter
Following the free market rules and operating in accordance with Polish Commercial Code, we pursue manufacturing and commercial activities in the field of PZL designed aviation products and introducing them to international markets. We also cooperate with such aviation industry leaders as: Sikorsky Aircraft, Spirit Aerosystem, Pratt & Whitney Canada and SAAB Aerostructures.

PZL Mielec produces cabins of BLACK HAWK helicopters for international recipients and the U.S. Army. Moreover it has launched the production line of S-70i helicopters, belonging to the family of combat proven BLACK HAWK helicopters. As of 2012 the company employed around 1800 employees, including the highly skilled engineering, technical and production departments. It also holds the technical, organizational and manufacturing certificates for designing and manufacturing aircraft and conducting aviation development programs.

PZL Mielec faces new opportunities and challenges now. The company has expanded its product range by adding the UH-60M BLACK HAWK cabin, and assembling the multipurpose S-70i BLACK HAWK helicopter. Success can only be achieved by a modern company with an efficient organizational structure together with employees, who create a strong production culture. This is the reason why the company puts so much emphasis on personnel qualifications - employee training both vocational and expert. Ethical business practices are also an important element. The Code of Ethics was implemented to serve as the base for systematical training schedule for work and work behavior ethics. By having trained staff, the company has a chance to develop and succeed in the new economic environment and to be recognized as trustworthy for the market and for its customers.

Aviation business was carried on by Polskie Zaklady Lotnicze Sp. z o.o. (the new PZL, a Limited Liability Company) established on October 19, 1998. The Facility first leased, then purchased production rights to M18 "Dromader", M28 and M26 "Iskierka" aircraft, continued to provide product support of the M20, An-28 and An-2 as well as spare parts supply for the same. In 2004 the Facility entered a period of relative stability, based on its aircraft production line of the M28, M28 "Bryza", M18 "Dromader" and M26 "Iskierka" and its increasing participation in the international industrial cooperation programs as sub-contractor for major aircraft manufacturers worldwide.

To move forward, however, the Company needed new investment into its manufacturing infrastructure, new products and access to advanced technology. PZL Mielec attracted attention of United Technologies Corporation, who looked for extra capacity for one of its member companies - Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. As a result, on March 16, 2007 United Technologies Holdings S.A. (a UTC Company) finalized purchase of 100% of PZL shares from the Industrial Development Agency (ARP S.A.). Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a world leader in helicopter manufacture and service opened a new chapter in the history of aviation business in Mielec. Through the modernization work carried out in 2007/2008, PZL entered a fast track of transformation into a first-class supplier for international aerosapce industry. Concurrently with the modernization, new systems and standards were implemented to ensure enhanced work safety and security , high quality, improved environment protection and working condition.
