Hägglunds

BAE Systems Hagglunds AB (BAE Hagglunds) is a leading military vehicle systems manufacturer, based in Sweden. The company operates as a subsidiary of BAE Systems plc (BAE Systems) and serves the global combat business line of BAE Systems. The company's key product portfolio includes armored all-terrain vehicles (ATV), infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) and turret systems. The company derives 90.00% of its revenue from export, offering products to the government and military groups in more than 40 countries worldwide. Its leading products in service with international militaries include Bv series all terrain carriers, Combat Vehicle 90 series of armored vehicles, and Spitterskyddad Enhets Platform (SEP) vehicle. BAE Hagglunds is headquartered in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden.

The basis for the activities of BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik was engaged in 1899 when Johan Hägglund started a carpentry shop with a focus on quality furniture. Towards the end of the 1920s had Hägglunds also evolved to be the largest furniture manufacturer in the entire North. Pretty soon the company sought to diversify with the manufacturing of buses. Until the 1950s, Hägglunds developed to become the largest producer manufacturer in Sweden of bus coachwork. In the early 1930s, it also started production of rail vehicles. This production led to, among other things, shunting locomotives, rail cars, subway cars, commuter trains and so on. Production remained in Ornskoldsvik until 1994.

Hägglunds also went into other areas. During World War II the company made units for vehicles. In addition, Hägglunds manufactured aircraft structures for use in the plant at Örnsköldsvik. Rail vehicle electric motors placed high demands on electro-mechanical skills. At the end of the 1940s the company began manufacturing motors. In the mid 1950s, these kinds of engines became the first conscious export venture in Hägglunds. In the late 1950s teh company built a factory for the mass production of elmoto- receptors. This business was sold in 1967 to ASEA. A dozen years earlier had Hägglunds has acquired the manufacturing rights to a brand new type of engines - a hydraulic motor, low speed, high torque, which radial pistons ran a cam ring. The first prototype was developed 1959. In the year 1966 this productiontion was moved to Mellansel. Developments in this area gradually went forward in terms of uses of that technique. This business is owned today by Bosch Rexroth and employed 500 or so people in the Örnsköldsvik area.

During the 1940s the company began manufacturing heavy machinery the mining industry as well as tunneling machines. The mining machine part was disposed in 1976 as Atlas Copco, while tunneling machine production was sold in 1993 to Rock Machines AB. Production of electric motors begant, in the early 1960s. Today this business is owned by the Finnish company Cargotec.

Already in the mid-1950s had Hägglunds built up a relationship with the Swedish defense. Thus, in 1956 ordered modifications to an older Swedish combat vehicle [fighter wagon] variant. Shortly afterwards Hägglunds was commissioned to build a carriage and in 1961 was commissioned to develop a brand new armored, called the 302.

When ASEA merged with the Swiss company Brown Boveri, ABB was formed, one of Europe's largest electrical engineering groups, with headquarters in Zurich. The original Hagglund Group was retained by ASEA as a wholly owned subsidiary and was therefore never be part of ABB. One of the reasons was the company's focus on the pros responder material. Series production commenced in 1981, and to date more than 11 000 copies sold to more than 40 countries.

In 1980 the company built a new depot and CV90 developed. Serial deliveries began in 1993 and the first export order was signed the following year. In 1998, the modern bandwagon BvS10 developed. In 1988 t;he company incorporated AB Hägglund & Sons with six new companies emerged; Hägglunds Component AB, Hagglunds Denison AB Hägglunds AB Traction, Hägglunds Marine & Offshore AB, Hägglunds Vehicle AB and Nord Systems Consulting.

The military vehicle business, Hägglunds Vehicle AB, which is the origin of current BAE Systems Hägglunds AB, was sold in 1997 to the British försvarsföre- time Alvis Plc, which then in turn, in 2004, sold the business to the Anglo-US defense group BAE Systems. This group has almost 100 000 employees. Bofors, which has been a partner of Hägglunds in Swedish Combat Vehicle project, also came to be included in the BAE Group's Swedish.

Already in 1994, Hägglunds Vehicle, in cooperation with FMV, prepared a new vehicle donsfamilj named in September This development continued until 2008 when FMV does not longer considered themselves able to afford to continue development.
