Dearsan C92 corvette - Turkmen class
Turkmenistan Navy signed a contract in August 2019 with Turkish company “Gulhan & Dearsan Joint Venture” about the construction of a corvette. In accordance with the contract, Turkish shipyard Dearsan will build one 92 meters corvette for the Turkmen Naval Forces. The project of the contructing of ship for Turkmen Navy is called “Turkmen” class corvette. The vessel was constructed at a new shipyard near Dzhanga, in Turkmenistan’s Balkan Region. It is planned to increase the number in the next stage. From 2010 to 2019, the Dearsan Shipyards had provided a total of 25 ships for the Navy and Coast Guard of Turkmenistan (10 units of 57 meters Tuzla Patrol Boats, 2 landing ships, 6 units 33 meters attack boats, 5 Search and Rescue Ships, 1 hydrographic vessel and 1 passenger vessel).
The Turkmen state news agency offered the usual effusive language about how the issues of systematic strengthening of the defense capability and modernization of the material and technical base of the National Army in accordance with the Military Doctrine, based on the permanent neutral status of the Fatherland and having a purely defensive nature, are the subject of unremitting attention of the head of state. The Turkmen Armed Forces commissioned its first Turkmen-class corvette, the “Deniz Han” (pennant number 01), at Turkmenbashi Naval Base on 11 August 2021. Early in the morning, President of Turkmenistan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the country, General of the Army Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov arrived at the scene. To the thunderous applause of the audience, the head of state cut the symbolic ribbon and, having opened a new military unit, began to familiarize himself with its infrastructure. The serviceman of the directorate expressed sincere gratitude to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief for the excellent conditions created for service and the successful fulfillment of the assigned tasks and, on behalf of the entire personnel of the Armed Forces, assured that the defenders of the Fatherland would continue to serve their beloved Motherland with faith and truth.
The corvette’s commanding officer welcomed the President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov onboard and hoisted the national flag to signify the ship’s commissioning into the Turkmen fleet during the ceremony. The corvette was named in honour of Deniz Khan (Tengis Khan) - one of the sons of the legendary ancestor of the Turkmens (Turks) Oguz Khan. Accordingly, in the Turkic tradition, Deniz Khan symbolizes the sovereignty and domination of the Turkic state in the seas.
A model of the 92-meter long corvette project developed by the joint venture Gülhan & Dearsan was first presented at the IDEF-2019 defence exhibition in Istanbul in April 2019. Corvette (C 92) was developed to operate on different missions, mainly anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and patrol/escort. It is suitable for helicopter operations. The hull is built from AH 36 while the superstructure is built from Marine Al alloy. The ship is 91.4 metres, the beam is 13.3 metres and the draft is 3.5 metres. The platform’s displacement is roughly 1,600 tons. The maximum speed is 26 knots and the range at economic speed is 3,000 NM. The C 92 can be operated by a crew of 100. The sensors include combat management system, 3D air and surface surveillance radar, IFF system, ESM, electronic countermeasure and CHAFF/DECOY systems.
The Deniz Han corvette is equipped with a mixture of Turkish and Italian weapons and equipment, including eight launchers of the MBDA Otomat Mk 2 anti-ship missile system, a 2x8 vertical launcher of the MBDA VL MICA short-range anti-aircraft missile system, 76-mm / 62 Leonardo rapid naval gun. Deniz Han is the first user of ASELSAN’s 35-mm twin anti-aircraft artillery system. The system is converted from Korkut system and using 35mm Air Burst Ammunition. The ship has two 25-mm STOP and two 12.7 mm STAMP), Turkish 196 mm six-barreled Roketsan ASRLS rocket launchers. The ship has a landing area for a medium class helicopter.
With the help of the latest technology and a digital system, the electronic map can track passenger and military vessels in the Caspian Sea. This process is carried out by means of specialized radar equipment designed to monitor the coastal part of the sea, and technical complexes on board the warships of the Navy. Also, with the help of digital equipment and satellite communications, the location of ships at sea, their provision with fuel and water are established. This allows the control center to maintain constant communication with military vessels. In the management department, the collected information is accumulated and processed. The equipment installed here facilitates this work and allows quickly sending information to the destination.
The ship will protect the shores of the Caspian Sea. The ship has ASELSAN’s Gökdeniz anti-aircraft defence system on board. The joint venture Gülhan & Dearsan was created specifically for the joint design and construction of military ships and signed a contract to construct one corvette 92 meters long for the Turkmen Navy. It is claimed that it is possible to build several more ships of this type for Turkmenistan in the future. The corvette construction was carried out by assembling from sections delivered from Turkey at the shipbuilding and ship repair plant of the State Border Guard of Turkmenistan in Ufra in Turkmenbashi (formerly Krasnovodsk).
