The Air Force organisation is an arm (service) of the armed forces and thus part of the defence sector of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). Together with Land Forces, Armed Forces Logistics and Command Support Organisations, Armed Forces College, Armed Forces Staff (AFS) and Joint Staff, the Air Force forms the defence sector. The missions of the Air Force are: maintaining air sovereignty (air policing, air defence), air transport and collection of intelligence. For this purpose, the Air Force has militia personnel – approx. 26,000 officers, NCOs and soldiers at its disposal. Its professional structure relating to command and control, instruction, maintenance, administration and professional aviators corps comprises 1,600 full-time employees.
New structures of the Air Force since January 2006 include:
- The Commander Air Force now has an air force staff with all the necessary principle functional areas (J) at his disposal
- Air Force Training Command has been disbanded. Some of its tasks will be taken over by J7
- The Central Administration of the air force has been dissolved. Its services, however, will continue to be provided by another organisation in Berne
- The Aeromedical Center (ACM) will now be directly subordinated to the Commander Air Force
- The present Air Force Operations will be developed into the largest organisational unit
- The present Air Force Operations Staff (J1 - J7) will be reallocated as the Air Force Staff to the Commander Air Force
- The Surveillance Wing was disbanded per 31/12/05. Its personnel were assigned to the new structures (professional aviators corps)
- The Air Force Logistics organisation has been dissolved. Its members and tasks have been reallocated to new bodies, e.g. to air base commands
