Austria - Bundesheer - Order of Battle

On 24 May 2005, the Council of Ministers decided the future structure of the armed forces in the document "Bundesheer 2010". On June 7, 2005 decisions on fundamental issues took place on this basis. This made all political decisions for the implementation of the reform of the Federal Army. The new structure affected not only the units and commands of the armed forces, but also the Central Office. The "Immediate troops" consist of Command military strife, military police - 2 lead support battalion, - 1 hunting command unit and - 1 international operational base (including CIMIC). Four Brigades include 4 Tank battalions, 4 Hunter battalions, 3 Hunter battalions (mountain beweglich), 1 Hunter battalion (with parts luftbeweglich), 2 mechanized infantry battalions, 2 tank battalions, - 3 reconnaissance artillery battalions, and 3 engineer battalions. The armed forces command is set up at the sites Graz and Salzburg and the mission support command at the location of Vienna. The Brigade commands are garisoned at the sites of Mautern, Linz-Ebelsberg, Klagenfurt and Absam. The military commands remain in the capital cities of Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Graz, Linz, Sankt Pölten, Eisenstadt and Vienna.

HQ Land Forces Command

The land forces represent the bulk of the Austrian army. Thanks to their training and their equipment, the soldiers of the land forces are extremely versatile. With four brigades and special forces, as well as with the territorially competent military commands the army covers all tasks in the area of ground forces - in exercises and operations domestically and abroad.

The 3rd and 4th Panzer grenadier Brigade and the 6th and 7th Jäger Brigade covering all the tasks set out in the Constitution of the Federal Army. The Jäger brigades ensure the ability to international missions by the high level of training of their soldiers and their mobility (luftbeweglich, armored high-mountain-movable or easily). The associations of the Panzergrenadier brigades are characterized by high intrinsic protection against environmental influences and weapons effect, great agility and massive firepower.

3 Panzer Grenadier Bde (Mechanised)

The 3rd Panzer grenadier Brigade is one of two mechanized brigades of the Austrian forces. With its "Leopard" 2A4 battle tanks and the armored personnel carriers "Ulan", the Association has state of the art equipment. While the fighting and infantry fighting vehicles for the enormous firepower, flexibility give the Panzergrenadiere and the infantry of Brigade. Through this combination, the 3rd Panzer grenadier Brigade can be used very targeted abroad.

4 Panzer Grenadier Bde (Mechanised)

The 4th mechanized infantry brigade is the second mechanized brigade of the land forces. In addition to its "Leopard"-Kampfpanzern and the "Ulan"-Schützenpanzern, the Association has still the Jäger battalion 12, Panzergrenadiere in Ried/Innkreis. This allows very flexible inserts throughout the country or abroad - either to the flood relief or in the peace mission in Kosovo.

6 Jager Bde (Infantry)

The 6th Brigade of the Hunter is the mountain Brigade of the Austrian armed forces. Their battalions are stationed in Vorarlberg, Carinthia, Tyrol and Salzburg. The Association distinguishes itself through its ability to use in the high mountains and difficult terrain - the soldiers of the 6th Brigade of hunters are the experts in these areas. With the two high mountain moving Hunter companies in Bludesch and Spittal an der Drau, as well as a mountain-moving hunters train to Lienz in East Tyrol, the 6th Brigade of hunters has the only mountain-moving Executive presence units (KPE) international operations (KAMBA) of the Austrian armed forces.

7 Jager Bde (Mechanised)

The 7th Brigade of the Hunter is one of the most flexible combat units of the army. Their Hunter battalions from Carinthia and Styria to perform also landings in cooperation with army helicopters. The soldiers of the Jäger battalion 17 are particularly manoeuvrable and well protected by their Pandur wheel tank while the reconnaissance and artillery battalion 7 for location information and the needed fire support.

Jagdkommando

The special operations forces are an element of the land forces that is becoming increasingly important. These forces have specialists for innovative and special tasks which are not or not sufficiently can be met with conventional soldiers and associations. The major part of the special operations forces is in the Jagdkommando [hunting command], which is based in Wiener Neustadt. Soldiers of the hunting commands can be used on land, water and air.

Military Area Commands

The military commands in the provinces are the indispensable link of the armed forces to civilian authorities and to other emergency services. Its main tasks are in the leadership of troops for assistance and disaster relief operations, as well as in the security assistance usage. To fulfil these tasks, also the Jäger battalions of militia at the disposal are the military commands. In addition, the military commands for the territorial administration and publicity are responsible.

In the provinces, the military commands each have an independent Fusilier battalion of militia, they access the back if necessary. In the province of Vienna are 1 and 2 Jäger battalions with the Vienna association available. The core tasks of these battalions include: Disaster relief, security assistance missions, Protection of important buildings and facilities. In addition, the militia form a pool of employees for foreign deployments of the Austrian Federal Army.

Through a targeted recruitment and development, the militia battalions in all Austria recruit soldiers, who gladly and voluntarily engage in the militia. Militia come from different areas and civilian professions: they are entrepreneurs, civil servants, employees, workers and students. In the associations of the militia, they combine their private knowledge with military training and practice. Through these special requirements, the soldiers make an important contribution in the armed forces and for the security of the country.
