Type 88 37mm SPAAA
The Type 88, the PLA's first generation fully automatic self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery [SPAAA] system, features a Type 74 twin-37mm AAA mounted on a Type 69 MBT chassis. The turret is welded and fully enclosed with search radar and fire control equipment on top. The design of the gun was del ayed because of the Great Cultural Revolution and technical problems. In 1979, the gun system was reinitiated and completed in the late 1980s by the No. 497 Factory and the No. 207 Research Institute. It was China ’s first independently developed anti-aircraft gun. The performance of the Type 88 was unsatisfactory, and the system never entered production. Development activity subsequently focused on work on the new Type 90II.
