Qiongsha-class Attack Transport

The Qiongsha-class infantry transport ship is a kind of maritime transport ship developed by China itself. The Chinese Navy currently has seven Qiongsha-class infantry transport ships. The Qiongsha class, aimilar in appearance to small passenger liners, were designed as transport and logistics vessel to support PLA troops stationed on PRC-occupied islands in the South China Sea.

The Qiongsha-class Attack Transport ships were built in the 1980s. The Qiongsha [ NATO reporting name] class consists of six troop transport ships introduced into the PLA Navy in the early 1980s. While it is a troop transport ship it has no amphibious landing capability, it serves primarily as a transport and logistics vessel in support of amphibious operations. The 2,150 tons vessels are equipped with two small landing craft to ofload troops and cargo, but cannot directly land troops on shore. All six hulls (Nanyun 830~835) were built in Guangzhou and are serving with the South Sea Fleet.

As the hull ages, Qiongsha No.1 and No.2 have successively withdrawn from the historical stage by 2012. 'Qiong No. 1' was personally approved by Premier Zhou Enlai, and the second 'Qiong 2' was also funded by the state. 'Qingsha No. 3' was funded by the state with a total of 30 million yuan of government bonds, Hainan Provincial People's Government raised 8 million yuan. "Zongsha No. 3" was launched on February 10, 2007, and sailed between Qingchang Port of Wenchang, Hainan and Yongxing Island of Xisha.

Xisha has no fresh water resources, no economic industry, and food must be transported from Hainan Island. In the past, the transport ship only went to the island once a month, and the vegetables that were transported were eaten for at least a week. In the days after, the officers and men could only eat dried vegetables and canned food. When there were high winds in Shanghai, they can't sail the boat. "Qiong No. 3" has a length of 84 meters, a width of 13.8 meters, a total tonnage of 2,500 tons, 200 passengers and 750 tons of cargo. The design institute of Guangzhou Shipyard International Co., Ltd. adopted the 'Qiong 1' as the mother type, and optimized the design on the basis of this, overcoming the inadequacies of 'Qiong 1' and 'Qiong 2'. According to the characteristics of the high winds and waves of the Xisha route, the anti-rolling fins were added on the side of the ship, which reduces the pain of the passengers.

Before the city was established in Sansha City, the sailing schedule of Qiong No. 3 was about one month, and the maximum number was two shifts a month. The "Qiong 3" ship sailed for about 15 hours to reach the West Fishing Pier of Yongxing Island.

The ship has a total of four floors, the bottom is loaded with cargo, the first, second and third floors are cabins. Each room has a bunk bed, a luggage compartment and a common table. The bed is made up of a mat with a pillow and quilts. The front and rear of the cabin are full of goods, most of which are fresh water, food, vegetables, electrical appliances and building materials.

In a tough environment, party members are the backbone of the heart. Hainan to Xisha is a special route with loneliness and hardship. This route is in a bad sea state and is located in the typhoon corridor of the South China Sea. It is often hit by typhoons in summer and autumn. Affected by the tides and docking docks, Qiong No. 3 is a nighttime voyage with low visibility and difficulty in navigation. "Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman". As a special party branch that sails all the year round, "safety first" is always a tight string in the hearts of every party member of the party branch.

Before the establishment of Sansha City, Qiong 3 traveled to Hainan Island and Yongxing Island twice a month, each time transporting 300 tons of fresh water and 200 tons of living materials. After the establishment of the city in Sansha in July 2012, with the increase in the number of people on the island, the demand for materials increased, and the Sansha Municipal Committee requested that Qingsha No. 3 be increased to four times a month. The normal route from Wenchang Qingyu Port to Sansha Yongxing Island is 180 nautical miles, and the flight time takes 15 hours or even longer. Due to the small number of personnel and heavy tasks, many crew members were unable to rest. In order to complete the task, the party branch organized all party members to learn and convey the spirit of the directives of the municipal party committee, and asked all party members not to back down in the face of difficulties, to play a good leading role, and to let other crew members take turns.

For each navigation mission, the political commissar, the captain and all party members took the lead in boarding the ship. Under the leadership of party members, many crew members also voluntarily gave up their rest and actively participated in the increase. After the increase in navigation, the living materials of the reefs in the Sansha Islands were obviously sufficient. The living conditions of the people on the islands and reefs were greatly improved, and the problem of people getting to and from the islands was effectively alleviated.

In the first 8 years since the operation of Qiongsha No. 3 began, there had never been a voyage accident. A total of 234 voyages have been completed, sailing 91,390 nautical miles, transporting 45,476 tons of goods to the island, transporting 115,331 person-times to the island, and replenishing 2,350 tons of fuel on the island. Territorial integrity and maritime rights and interests have made outstanding contributions. In 2005, the Qiong 3 round won the national advanced unit of spiritual civilization; in 2006, the Qiong 3 round party branch won the advanced grassroots party branch of Hainan Province.

In the early 1990s, the PLA Navy converted one of the Qiongsha class into a hospital ship. The vessel (the Nankang, hull Nanyun 832) was painted white with a red cross painted on its funnel. At least another hull (Nanyun 833) was subsequently converted into the same role.
