PHL-03 / AR2 - 300mm long-range rocket

China's PHL-03 (export-numbered AR2) is a 12 round 300 mm Multi Launch Rocket System (MLRS), developed by the China North Industries Corporation. Judging from the appearance, PHL03 type of rocket with Russian 9K58-type "Tornado" rocket system are very similar. PHL03 rocket system was introduced into the PLA in 2004-2005, and also to the international arms market.

The PHL03 type 300 mm multiple rocket weapon system consists of rockets, launch tube group, launch vehicles, command vehicles, transport vehicle components. Each PHL03 rocket system is equipped with four operators, with 12 rockets fired in the first volley. A reload vehicle, based on the same chassis, carries another shipment of 12 rockets, with a hydraulic crane for launch vehicles to provide mechanized loading. The PHL03 rockets use solid fuel propulsion, with a maximum range of 150 km. Rocket length 7.3 m, diameter of 0.3 meters, take-off mass 840 kg, 235 kg warhead quality.

    New MRLChina's new multiple rocket launcher, which debuted at the National Day parade on 01 October 2019, not only fires rockets, but also tactical ballistic and anti-ship missiles, Chinese media reported, with experts saying on Monday the weapon could give the Chinese military an overwhelming advantage over enemies.

    The PCL-191 rocket artillery system first entered service with the Chinese ground forces in 2019. The PCL-191 is capable of firing x8 accurate 370mm rockets at a distance of up to 350km with a short reload time of only 10minuttes. The new multiple rocket launcher, still not known by its official designation, was developed based on the PHL-03 long-range multiple rocket launcher. It uses an 8x8 wheeled high mobility chassis, weighs 45 tons, and can adapt to temperatures ranging from -22 C to 55 C, Ordnance Industry Science Technology, a Xi'an-based periodical focused on the national defense industry, reported.

    Unlike the PHL-03, which is loaded with a fixed type of ammunition, the new rocket launcher has two modularized launch cells, and each can carry different types of ammunition, the periodical said, noting that this brings versatility and high efficiency to the weapon. While the weapon only carried two sets of four 370-millimeter rockets at the parade, the report said it could also switch to two sets of five 300-millimeter rockets, or the combination of the two.

    China North Industries Group Corp (Norinco) showcased the AR-3 multiple rocket launcher at Airshow China 2016 in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province in on November 3, 2016. The export version of the new multiple rocket launcher, the AR-3, can even switch to the 750-millimeter Fire Dragon 480 tactical ballistic missile and TL-7B anti-ship missile, the report said.

    The AR-3 has a range of about 280 kilometers with rockets, and the domestic version is expected to be able to hit targets at 360 kilometers, even farther with missiles, the periodical wrote, noting that it can target high value strategic targets like airports, command centers, supply bases and anti-air installations. Highly automated, the weapon has a full communications system, weather information system, command system and maintenance system, allowing as few as three people to operate in minimum combat reaction time, the report said.

    The new multiple rocket launcher will give the People's Liberation Army an overwhelming advantage over its enemies, as it is highly mobile, easy to operate and can fire very fast. It can fire across the Taiwan Straits, be deployed not only on plains but also on plateaus, and strike at naval targets. Chinese experts note that the AR-3 could be the best on the international market.

    The People's Liberation Army deployed the advanced long-range rocket launcher to the Himalayas in april 2021, in a move aimed at reinforcing China's border defence and acting as a deterrent to India, according to a military mouthpiece and analysts. It was the first time that the PLA has confirmed the deployment of long-range rocket systems to the border with India.

    An artillery brigade stationed 5,200 metres (17,000 feet) above sea level in Xinjiang military district has intensified its drills using a rocket system during full-wing combat-ready training, a report on the front page of PLA Daily said. The report did not give the type or firing range of the weapon, but said it was a system with a long-range rocket with precision strike capability, and had entered service in 2019.

    "The new weapon system should be a long-range rocket launcher that can carry multiple 300mm (12-inch) or even bigger rockets with more than 100km of firing range," said military commentator Song Zhongping, a former instructor in the PLA's Artillery Corps, the predecessor of Rocket Force. "Only a long-range MLRS is powerful enough to act as a deterrent to India, as the Indian troops are also stepping up military deployment along the borders."

    Macau-based military observer Antony Wong Tong said the long-range MLRS mentioned by PLA Daily was likely to be the most advanced PHL-16, or the Type PCL-191. "The 42-tonne PHL-03 is too bulky for the high altitude ... while earlier reports implied that the new PCL-191 would become the military's main battle rocket system," he said. The mysterious Type PCL-191 was debuted in the National Day Parade in 2019, but with its name concealed. The name was disclosed a few months later by Chinese military magazine Modern Ships. The modular rocket system of the PCL-191 is able to carry eight 370mm rockets, each with a range of 350km (220 miles), or two 750mm Fire Dragon 480 tactical ballistic missiles, each capable of flying up to 500km, according to Modern Ships.
