100-meter AGOR 2021 NEWCON

China has built a new SWATH style ocean surveillance ship, designed to tow a surveillance towed array sensor system. The catamaran design prevents it from rolling in heavy seas. Raj Kumar reported 09 February 2021 that the PLAN's largest oceanographic survey catamaran was getting ready for launch at Huludao. It is world's largest. with interesting equipment onboard. At a length of 100meters and beam of 32meters, it is 14m longer than USNS Impeccable TAGOS-23.

The 2002 Program Guide to the U.S. Navy related that T-AGOS ocean surveillance ships are small, civilian-manned surveillance ships that play a prominent role in the Navy’s overall anti-submarine warfare and maritime domain awareness capability. T-AGOS ships provide a platform for the Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System (AN/UQQ-2 SURTASS). T-AGOS is the Navy’s premier long-range, mobile, surface ASW platform capable of detecting modern submarine targets. Although these ships are part of the Military Sealift Command’s Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force (NFAF), they come under the operational control of fleet commanders. There are nine ships in four classes: a three-ship monohull Stalwart (T-AGOS-1) class, a four-ship twin-hull Victorious (T-AGOS-19) class, (a Small Waterplane Area Twin-Hull [SWATH] design that enables the ships to operate in relatively high seas), a single large (5,500-ton) SWATH ship, USNS Impeccable (T-AGOS-23), designed a a platform for SURTASS towed array and Low Frequency Active (LFA), and a single leased vessel, the R/V Cory Chouest.

The marine survey ship is a tool for marine survey research. Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull ship (SWATH) is a kind of high-performance ship. In high seas, it has the unapproachable good rough water quality of conventional ship. Small waterplane area twin hull ship (SWATH) obtained the attention of world's shipbuilding circles owing to its good rough water quality, but remains the bigger problem of resistance when the hydrostatic high speed is navigated. A properly designed SWAT inherently provides a much more "level" ride as far as minimizing the amount of pitch and roll inherent in more conventional designs.

The term "swath" is an acronym for Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull. Conceptually, these types of vessels date back to the last century and are characterized generally as comprising two submerged parallel propulsion torpedo-like pontoons, each of which is provided with one or more vertical struts which project upwardly a substantial distance above the water line and which at their upper ends support the entire superstructure of the vessel. In general, the combined buoyancy of the two propulsion pontoons is sufficient to support the superstructure of the vessel a predetermined distance (e.g., 5-8 feet) above water level while the boat is at rest as well as when it is under way in relatively calm waters. It is well known to provide swath vessels with underwater horizontal stabilizers or canards to assist in maintaining stability of the boat in terms of pitch, roll or yaw while moving at medium to higher speeds either calm water or rough waters.

Since the dawn of the 21st century, China has entered the peak period of marine survey ships for national defense engineering and related major marine special survey needs. China has planned to develop different types of ocean-going survey ships, and create an era of independent design and construction of large-scale ocean-going survey ships. From the mid-1980s to the end of the 20th century, the number China’s marine survey ships is small, but it has made China truly enter the era of far-reaching ocean and polar surveys, and has had a profound impact on China’s marine survey activities.

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, China’s marine survey ships have developed from offshore to ocean-going, from hundreds of tons to thousands of tons and even 10,000 tons, providing strong guarantees for marine scientific research and research, and greatly improving China The international status of the marine industry. However, there is a big gap between the number, survey equipment, and technical level of the oceanic survey vessels currently owned by China and the implementation of the maritime power strategy. Therefore, it is based on the development history, characteristics, experience and trends of foreign oceanic survey vessels.

Marine acoustic survey ship is an important carrier for marine acoustic research which are used for marine acoustic information collection. Various needs for ocean acoustic surveys include improve ocean acoustic surveys and underwater acoustics. Scientific research capabilities in the field of interception, while taking into account the acoustic signals of underwater targets. Information collection, underwater target alerting and other military applications can promote military and civilian fusion to provide offshore platforms and mobile research facilitries. The normal use of the equipment has high noise characteristics and seakeeping of the mother ship.

The subsea monitoring ship is a type of acoustic survey ship, mainly the navy, used to monitor the dynamics of submarines of other countries. The ships of this type are equipped with active and passive sonar array detection system to detect the submarine under the sea. The sonar array can be thrown into the sea like a net, it is a towed antenna array, thus measuring the sea bottom signal.

Modular construction plays a major role in improving the economy and efficiency of marine survey vessels, which has been confirmed on many foreign marine survey vessels. China's experience in the modular construction of marine survey vessels is still seriously insufficient, and we need to continue to develop.

Catamarans have the advantages of large deck area, low wave resistance, and easy installation of survey equipment. After the 1980s, multi-type catamaran marine survey ships were developed abroad. China built the first 2,500-ton large small waterplane area catamaran in 2009, which has iconic significance and technology leadership in both design and construction; the use of catamarans and deep optimization also require ship design , Continued exploration of users.

With the continuous deepening of marine survey research, higher requirements are put forward for the quiet performance of marine survey ships, deep-sea drilling capabilities, ice-breaking capabilities, and deep-diving surveys. China is currently keeping up with the trend of the times and striving to develop ships with relevant capabilities. For example, "Experiment 1" has good quiet performance, and "Experiment 6" has certain ocean drilling capabilities. In addition, China is also planning to build new polar regions. Scientific research ships and new deep submersible mother ships, etc.

Due to historical reasons, China’s early oceanographic survey ships needed to have the ability to accompany warships, so they chose a slender ship type; this type of ship has the advantages of low wave-making resistance and fast sailing speed, but it also has large fuel consumption, small deck area, and Defects such as small rolling cycle are not conducive to improving the economy and comfort of marine survey activities. In recent years, China is actively improving the level of rationalization of the value distribution of newly-built marine survey ships, and at the same time gradually compiling a classification scheme for marine survey ships.
