705th Research Institute CSIC

China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation 705 Research Institute, established in 1992 to develop and produce complicated castings and equipment, has strong comprehensive research capabilities, involving multidisciplinary and multidisciplinary, in systems engineering, information engineering, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, automatic control, computer technology, precision instruments and other fields have a high level and strong advantages. It has more than ten professional technical research offices, engineering departments, scientific research management, logistics support institutions, national key laboratories for information processing and control, and more than ten large-scale professional laboratories with advanced technology. It also includes high-tech companies, technology development departments, electronic equipment factories and other technology industries. There are branches in Kunming and Shanghai.

The direction of the company is to develop and produce complicated, difficult castings, oil logging apparatus and oil-associated gas recovery equipment. It had more than 170 employees. Among the employees, there are more than 100 people have achieved college degree, covering 56% of the total employees. The management team has 28 people, and 16 of them have achieved the master degree. There were 23 senior engineers and 13 engineers. All together there are nearly 50 researchers, which cover about 30% of the total employees.

In the trading area, it can produce the parts with sand castings, lost foam castings, investment castings, gravity castings, die castings, forging, plating and plastic injection process and a wide range of machining parts. We mainly produce valve bodies and all kinds of parts with several shapes or dimensions you can order. The major material includes cast iron, carbon steel, copper, aluminum, stainless steel (CF3M, CF8, CF8M, 17-4PH), alloy steel, and so on. It has rich experience in the foundry, and can provide customized products as per customers' drawings or samples and do our best to satisfy our customers' quality and deliver requirements. It not only provides rough castings but also can do more for customers such as heat treatment, machining, polishing, painting and etc.

At CSIC’s 705th Research Institute, tests have been conducted on a technique called Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS). The additive manufacturing technique uses laser as a power source to sinter powdered material, typically metal, aiming the laser at points in space defined by a 3D model, thereby binding the material together to create a solid structure, with up to 99% density.

Back in August 2014, the 705th Research Institute set up a dedicated team called U3 Team based in Kunming, China’s southern Yunnan province, to focus on acquiring the skills and knowledge to materialise the use of 3D printing for CSIC. And after one year of dedicated work, the institute finally came up with its DMLS attached with intellectual property rights.
