The thirteen military regions established by 1956 were reduced to eleven in the late 1960s. Those eleven military regions were reduced to seven by 1985-88. The seven military regions were reduced to five military regions as of 01 January 2016. The 54th Group Army was re-aligned from the Jinan Military Region to the Central Theater Command.

54th Group Army

The 54th Group Army was originally activated as the 54th Corps in 1949 under the Fourth Field Army. It was comprised of the 160th, 161st and 162nd Divisions. The unit took part in the Civil War. The unit was deactivated in 1950 and its main elements became a public security division in Kiangsi. The 161st Division was reassigned to the 48th Corps.

In March 1951 the 54th Corps was reactivated and was comprised of elements of the 44th and 45th Corps. The 54th was deployed to Korea in the Summer of 1951 as part of the second wave of Chinese forces to assist in operations against UN forces, and upon its return to China was stationed in Szechwan. In 1962 the 54th Corps was redeployed to the Tibetan Military Region to support operations against India.

54th Army - Early History

The 54th Army of the People's Liberation Army was ordered to form in Huiyang, Guangdong in October 1952. In October 1952, the Fourth Field Army was ordered to reorganize the 45th Army Headquarters, Direct Team, 134th, 135th Division and 44th Army 130th, 131st Division 391 Regiment to form the 54th Army, Ding Shengren Military commander, Xie Ming served as political commissar, and Wu Ruishan served as deputy military commander. Formerly the 130th Division of the 44th Army, Jiang Runguan was the Division Chief, and Yao Minmin was the political commissar; Formerly the 45th Army, the 134th Division was reorganized into the 54th Army, the 134th Division, Zhang Xiaobing was the division, and Lan Wenzhao was the Political Committee; the original 135th Division was adapted For the 135th Division of the 54th Army, Ren Sizhong served as the division commander, and Wei Tongtai and Chen Dezhi served as the deputy division commanders. After the 45th Army and the 44th Army merged, which army's designation was revoked? Because the two armies were outstanding troops, they were persistent, and finally Zhou Enlai ruled. The original designation of the two armies was cancelled at the same time, and the mantissas "5" and "4" of the two armies were assigned to the 54th army.

After the army was formed, it was ordered by the Central Military Commission to prepare for fighting in the DPRK. After two months of mobilization education and expedition preparations against the US and North Korea, on January 21, 1953, from the north of Huiyang, Guangdong, in early February, the 130th Division entered the Tieshan Peninsula of North Korea to undertake the anti-enemy landing operations; the military and the 134th The 135th Division entered the Liaodong Peninsula and was tasked with guarding coastal defense and combat training. On May 2, the army led the 134th and 135th divisions into the DPRK. In mid-May, the various departments successively moved to the area near Pyongyang to take over the defense of the 39th army. They were responsible for resisting enemy landing on the west coast and anti-airborne operations in Pyongyang. In late June, it was ordered to go to the front line of Jincheng from the west coast, and was assigned to the 20th Corps to participate in the summer counterattack. On July 13, the battle began.

Except for the 134th Division assembled in Xiepuli as a reserve team, the 130th Division was assigned to the 68th Army to attack the enemies in Eshidong and Beitingling, and the 135th Division was assigned to the 67th Army. From Qingpo Mountain to the enemy of Lichuandong and Jinchengchuan. On the same day, the 130th Division captured 424.4 heights and 866 positions; the 135th Division captured Lichuandong, Ludongli and other places. After that, the ministries turned to defensive operations. In the position defense operation, Ma Junkun, the second platoon leader of the 3rd company of the 1st Battalion of the 404th Regiment, suffered three times of injuries and was interrupted by his legs. More than 10 offensives, before giving his precious life. After the war, it was awarded the title of "Second Class Battle Hero" by the Volunteer Headquarters. The third platoon leader of the 7th Company, 3rd Battalion, Wang Zhanshan commanded agile and flexible tactics in the battle to defend the position. It successfully repelled the enemy for more than 40 attacks, and successfully completed the tasks of defending the position and blocking the enemy.

After the truce of North Korea, the army took up the task of guarding the outposts of the March 8th Line from Qiaotianli in the west to the North Hanjiang in the east. In order to prevent the US military and Li Chengwan’s puppet army from tearing up the armistice agreement and reinvigorating the war, the troops have put into intense war preparations. In mid-April 1954, on the orders of the Volunteer Army Headquarters, the defense of the Jinchengchi area was transferred to the Korean People’s Army, and the troops moved to the northern Yupingli, Wenchuan, Longtanli, Plateau, and Yongxing areas of Yuanshan to shoulder the task of guarding the east coast.

Recent Activity

In March 1955, the East Coast defense was transferred to the Korean People’s Army, and the upper coast cave, Xuanchuan, Guyi, Dingzhou, and lower districts were prepared for the west coast. During the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the whole army had emerged advanced collectives such as the "International First Class Giant Company" and many heroes such as Ma Junkun. In May and July 1958, the army was ordered to return home in batches.

After liberation, the army participated in combat operations such as Tibetan counterinsurgency, anti-American aid and Vietnam, China-India self-defense counterattack, China-Vietnam self-defense counterattack, and established new merits for the motherland and the people. After returning home, the 54th Army went to the northwest and southwest regions to participate in the bandit warfare, and went to Tibet in 1959 to participate in the counterinsurgency war. In the 1962 counterattack against self-defense in India, the 130th Division under the command of the Ministry of the Army obtained the "Vanong Victory" and gave the Indian Army's main fourth army-the Rommel Regiment, who claimed to have participated in World War II and defeated "Desert Fox" The honorary troops of the country have a reputation for annihilating the Indian military. Until now, when the Indian Army Officer School simulated the actual combat test, regardless of the size of the imaginary enemy, whether it was an army, division, or brigade, the designation was always "54", and the 54th Army became the enemy of the Indian A3.

During the disarmament in the 1980s, the 43rd Army was withdrawn along with the Wuhan Military Region, and the main 127th Division was under the 54th Army. Therefore, the divisions that make up today’s 54th Army were all the elite units of the original Lin Biao’s Fourth Field Army: 127 divisions (43th army, former Shino 6 vertical), 130 divisions (44th army, former Shino 7 vertical), 162 division (45 army, former Shino 8 vertical 135 division). The 134th Division of the 54th Army was transformed into an armed police force.

In the disarmament reorganization in the 1980s, the former 55th Army was cancelled, and the main 162th Division was merged into the 135th Division. In order to take care of the sentiment of the layoffs, the 162th Division was used instead. The reorganized 54th Army was classified as a Group A Army, and the whole army implements the establishment of four divisions, which belongs to the strategic reserve force of the whole army.

The 127 divisions and 162 divisions of the subordinates were equipped with the army's first-class mechanized equipment, and the 130 division was a mixed division. They were all deployed on the Beijing-Guangzhou Longhai line, adjacent to the 15th Airborne Army, and can be quickly delivered during wartime. It was the military's closest strategic reserve team to the front line of the Taiwan Strait. The 54th Army also had military helicopters, electronic countermeasures, special forces, and the first? The technical division of tank division, air defense guided artillery brigade, ground artillery brigade, etc., with a total of 89,000 troops, guards the Central Plains, reinforces Beijing to the north, and Nanjing and Guangzhou theaters to the south. It was a rapid reaction force with strategic tasks. The main combat and support forces can be mobilized in 6 hours, and the delivery to Beijing or the Taiwan Straits takes only 15 hours.

At the National Day parade in 1999, the sixth party team of new infantry wheeled armored vehicles was the officers and soldiers of the 127th Division of the 54th Army. This wheeled armored vehicle (type WZ551) not only had high-speed maneuverability, but also had strong armor protection capabilities. The "three defenses" and night vision functions were complete, and it can fight in harsh environments; it can attack incoming low altitudes against air. The target and strong firepower make it a fast-moving "steel fortress" and can also wading into water. With such weapons, the field capability of the 54th Army would be qualitatively improved.

Not long after the National Day military parade, tens of thousands of officers and soldiers of the 54th Army set up battlefields in the Central Plains, practicing martial arts and various tactics of attacking Taiwan. The soldiers were full of "use me in the first battle and win with me" confidence. At that time, Sun Yat-sen’s Iron Guard was waiting for the motherland’s order to "clean up the Kuomintang portal, eliminate the national scum that betrayed Mr. Zhong Shan, eliminate Taiwan independence, and liberate the whole of China!"

The 54th Army belonged to the Jinan Military Region. Political commissar Liu Yongzhi was stationed in Xinxiang, Henan.
