PLA 49th Army

The predecessor of the 49th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was the 12th column of the Northeast Military Region. The column was developed by the Second and Third Divisions of the New Fourth Army and some troops of the Shandong Military Region that entered the Northeast after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War.

On September 12, 1945, in order to implement the strategic deployment of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to the northeast and strive to control the northeast, the second and third divisions of the New Fourth Army and a part of the Shandong Military Region transferred to the northeast, respectively, to the east of Harbin and South and Zhaodong, Zhaozhou, and Zhaoyuan regions, together with the local anti-Japanese alliance, county brigade, security team, etc., formed an armed team, under the leadership of the Beiman and Ximan Military Regions, and participated in the gangsters from the winter solstice in October 1946. Fight, build bases, and continue to grow and develop. Based on these troops, an independent fifth division was formed in November. From May to June, the independent second and fourth divisions participated in battles such as Rock and Wula Street in the Northeast Summer Offensive. From September to March 1948, three independent divisions participated in the battles of Taojiatun, Xinlitun, Siping, and Faku during the offensive in autumn and winter in the Northeast.

During the period (March), three independent divisions were combined to form the 12th column of the Northeast People's Liberation Army. Zhong Wei served as commander, Yuan Shengping served as political commissar, Xiong Botao served as deputy commander, and Chen Zhifang served as director of the political department. The three independent divisions were renamed the 34th, 35th, and 36th divisions of the column in turn. After the formation of the columns, a new army movement and military training were launched. In June, the task of besieging the Changchun Kuomintang army was carried out. After the peaceful liberation of Changchun, it participated in the battle of Liaoshen and Shen and performed peripheral combat missions in Shenyang. Cooperate with neighboring troops to conquer Shenyang.

In November 1948, according to the Central Military Commission’s order to unify the army’s establishment and troop designation, the 12th column was renamed the 49th Army of the Chinese National Liberation Army, Zhong Wei served as the commander, Yuan Shengping served as the political commissar, Xiong Botao served as the deputy commander, and Chen Zhifang politics Director of the department. The 34th Division was changed to the 145th Division, Wen Yucheng was the division head, and Tan Youlin was the political commissar; the 35th Division was changed to the 146th division, Wang Kuixian was the division, and Li Zaishan was the political commissar; He was a political commissar. The 13th Division of the Northeast Field Army’s Independent Division was transferred to the army’s organizational system and renamed the 162 Division. Wang Zhaoxiang served as the division commander and Chen De served as the political commissar.

The army had more than 50,000 people. Under the Northeast Field Army. From December to January 1949, participated in the Battle of Pingjin. The 145th Division was assigned to a comrade army to capture Tianjin, and the main force was to liberate Tanggu. Later, the 145th and 146th Divisions took charge of the Tianjin defense task. In March, the army was incorporated into the 13th Corps of the Fourth Field Army. In April, march to Central and Southern China. In July, it defeated Shasha City and Gangneung in the battle of Yisha, and took the victory to cross the Yangtze River to pursue the Kuomintang army. In August, the 162nd Division was transferred to the formation of the Hunan Military Region. Participate in the battle of Hengbao from September to October. In November, the Shaoyang area of Hunan entered Guangxi and was tasked with receiving the city and maintaining traffic safety.

In January 1950, the three divisions in turn served Pingle, Liuzhou, and Guilin divisions, and the troops participated in the banditry. In April, the military department merged with the leadership of the Guangxi Military Region. The three divisions belonged to the leadership of the Guangxi Military Region, and the 49th Army was revoked. On July 15, 1951, based on the division of the 154th Division, it was expanded into the 49th Army Headquarters. The three divisions under its jurisdiction were rebuilt, and the original divisions of the various divisions were under the leadership of the Guangxi Military Region. January 8, 1952. The number of the 49th Army was revoked, and the headquarters was reorganized into the 3rd Army of the Air Force, the 145th Division was incorporated into the 21st Corps, the 146th Division was transferred to the Guangxi Military Region, and the 147th Division was reorganized into the 12th Division of the Public Security.
