PLA 48th Army

The predecessor of the 48th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was the 11th column of the Northeast Field Army. The column was developed by armed forces in parts of the Jicha Reliao Military Region.

In November 1945, the local army in the northern Hebei region led by the Communist Party of China was jointly organized as the 9th Brigade of Jinchaji Military Region. In July 1946, the 9th Brigade of Jinchaji Military Region was renamed the 5th Brigade of Jinchaji Military Region. In September, part of the local troops in the eastern Hebei and western Liaoning areas were jointly organized as the 17th Brigade of the Liaoning Military Region. The two brigades led the masses to defend and develop the base areas under the leadership of the Ryiao and Jicha (now northwestern Hebei) regions, Jicha Reliao, and they fought Ningcheng and Zhaochuan successively.

In April 1947, the Jicha Reliao Military Region was placed under the Northeast Democratic Coalition. In May, in order to cooperate with the northeast summer offensive, the 5th and 17th Brigade participated in the summer operations of Rehe (the name of the old province, which governs northeast Hebei and western Liaoning). From July to mid-October, the 17th and 5th Brigade were renamed the independent first and second divisions of the military region of Jichare; at the same time, some local troops from the eastern and western Liaoning regions were combined to form the independent third division of the Jirezi military region.

From late October to February 1948, in order to cooperate with the offensive in autumn and winter in the Northeast, three independent divisions took part in the Battle of Rehe in autumn and attacked some railway lines in the Northeast. In March, the 11th Column of the Northeast People's Liberation Army was established in Chaoyang, Liaoning. He Jinnian was appointed as commander, Chen Renqi as political commissar, Zhou Renjie as deputy commander, and Yang Chunfu as director of the political department.

The three independent divisions were renamed the 31st, 32nd, and 33rd divisions of the column in turn. The whole column had more than 31,000 people. After the formation of the columns, a new army movement and military training were launched. From May to June, it participated in the Battle of Jirecha, initiated by the North China Military Region, and carried out battles such as Xiangbi Mountain, Longhua, and Changli, and cooperated with the North China Field Army to suppress the reinforcement of the Kuomintang Army to the Northeast. Li Rongshun, deputy commander of the 31st Division, died in the battle of Longhua. Communist Party member Dong Cunrui used the explosive package to blow away the bridgehead and clear the obstacles for the troops. He was followed as a fighting hero and a model Communist. From September to early November, it participated in the battle of Liaoshen and successfully completed the tasks of capturing Changli, cutting off the Beining Railway, and blocking the Jinxi Kuomintang Army's aid to Jinzhou in the north.

In November 1948, according to the order of the Central Military Commission, the 11th Column was renamed the 48th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, He Jinnian was the commander of the army, Chen Renqi was the political commissar, Zhou Renjie was the deputy military commander, and Yang Chunfu was the deputy political commissar and director of the political department. Ting served as chief of staff. The 31st Division was renamed the 142nd Division, Ou Zhifu was the division head, Xie Dongzhong was the political commissar; the 32nd Division was renamed the 143rd Division, Li Guanghui was also the division chief, and Liu Luchang was the political commissar.

The 33rd Division was renamed the 144th division, Zhou Renjie was the division chief, Zhong The grammar served as a political commissar, and at the same time, the 8th Division of Jicha Reliao Independent Division was revoked, and the army was incorporated into the 144th Division; the 6th Independent Division of Jicha Reliao Military Region was transferred to the military establishment and renamed the 161st Division. Zhao Xiamei Village served as the division chief, Zhong Hui was a political commissar. The whole army had more than 55,000 people and was affiliated to the Northeast Field Army. From December to January 1949, it participated in the Battle of Pingjin, conquered Miyun, Shijingshan Power Plant, Mentougou coal mine area, cleared the Kuomintang stronghold in the western suburbs of Beiping (now Beijing), and completed the siege of Peiping with the comrades.

In April, the army was incorporated into the 15th Corps of the Fourth Field Army. In June, the 161st Division was transferred to the Jiangxi Military Region. In the first and middle of July, it participated in the Battle of Hunan and Jiangxi. From late July to August, the army carried out the Battle of Gannan alone, and at the cost of more than 200 casualties, it achieved a great victory in annihilating the Kuomintang army of more than 17,000 people and liberating 22 seats in the county town, creating favorable conditions for the main field army to enter Guangdong. On September 9, the Jiangxi Military Region. During this period, the main force was in the southwest of Jiangxi and a bandit who entered northern Guangdong.

In December 1950, the 143rd Division was converted into artillery, and the 151st Division of the 38th Army was changed to the 143rd Division and transferred to the army. In March 1952, the 142nd Division was reorganized as the 11th Division of the Public Security Bureau, the 143rd Division was transferred to the Central South Military Region Jingjiang Flood Control Engineering Command, and the 144th Division was transferred to the 21st Corps. On March 15, the 48th Army Headquarters was changed to the 21st Corps, and the army was revoked.
