PLA 34th Army

The 34th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was formed in February 1949. It was composed of the 34th Brigade and Independent Brigade of the Jianghuai Military Region of the People's Liberation Army and the 132nd Division of the 77th Army of the Kuomintang Uprising in the Huaihai Campaign. Under the jurisdiction of the 100th, 101st, and 102nd Divisions, it was under the 8th Corps of the 3rd Field Army.

In December 1946, the Central China Branch decided to form a detachment near Huaibei, appoint Rao Zijian as commander and political commissar of the detachment, and return to the enemy of Huaibei. At the same time, the Huainan Working Committee of the Communist Party of China was established to be responsible for the restoration of Huainan Road East. On February 24, 1948, Chen Qingxian and Cao Diqiu led the 34th Brigade of the 12th Column of Huaye into Huainan to rebuild the Huainan Military Region. On March 28, the Huaibei Military Region was rebuilt. On May 29, the Jianghuai Military Region was formed by the merger of the Huainan Military Region and the Huaibei Military Region. Thirty-fourth brigade (with Huaye Twelve Columns transferred) wad an independent brigade.

After the formation of the Jianghuai Military Region in 1948, it moved to Jinpu from June to September, and cooperated with the East China Field Army in the Kaifeng, Suiqi, and Jinan campaigns to contain the KMT army. In November, it participated in the Battle of Huaihai, laid siege to Zhao Dun, prevented the Huang Baitao Corps from escaping westward, and then cooperated with the thirteenth column to wipe out the Second and Third Divisions of the Kuomintang Army, liberating Lingbi.

In February 1949, the 34th Brigade, Independent Brigade of the Jianghuai Military Region, and the 132nd Division of the 77th Army of the Kuomintang Uprising in the Huaihai Campaign established the 34th Army of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. Zhao Qimin served as political commissar, Rao Zijian and Guo Jiafang served as first and second deputy military commanders respectively, Wu Xian served as deputy political commissioner, Zhang Xiulong served as chief of staff, and Wang Degui served as director of the political department. In July, the Military Department and Nanjing Security Command, the 100th Division was transferred to the 33rd Military Organization. In November, the 101st Division was transferred to the Tenth Corps. In December, the 102nd Division Division was transferred to the 3rd Field Army Special Forces Column and later changed to the Artillery Division 3 Division.

In January 1950, the 6th Regiment of the Third Field Army Instructor was transferred to the 34th Army and the Nanjing Military Region Police Command. At the same time, the first military organization formed the East China Military Region Aviation Department. In November, the military organ and other troops were reorganized as the 13th Division of East China Public Security. The 34th Army designation was revoked.
