PLA 30th Army
The predecessor of the 30th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was the 12th column of the East China Field Army. The column was developed by some troops from the 5th Army Division of the Central Military Region of the New Fourth Army.
In the spring of 1946, the 6th Brigade of the 2nd Division of the New Fourth Army withdrew northward from Huai'an, Jiangsu, and merged with the 5th Military Division of the Central China Military Region to take charge of the 5th Military Division. In May, the 5th Army Division of the Central China Military Region and the Zhao Yunxiang Department of the Yancheng Uprising were combined to form the 10th Column of the Central China Field Army, governing 6 regiments. In February 1947, the Shandong Field Army and the Central China Field Army were reorganized, and the 10th Column of the Central China Field Army was organized as the 12th Column of the East China Field Army, still serving as the North Jiangsu Military Region. Chen Qing first served as commander, Cao Huoqiu served as political commissar, Qin Jian and Chang Yuqing served as deputy commanders, and Sun Keji served as director of the political department. Soon, Xie Zhenhua served as commander and Li Ganhui served as political commissar. From the end of June, it participated in the battle of Lianshui, joined forces with comrades to conquer Fangshan, Ahu, Chengtou and other strongholds outside Haizhou. In July, the 36th Brigade was formed on the basis of the 5th and 6th Army divisions. In the winter of the same year, it took part in the Huaihai Battle, and carried out assaults with the comrades in Xin'an Town and Ahu District, east of Xuzhou, to ensure that the main force was to annihilate the Huang Baitao Corps, and then participated in the pursuit, siege and final annihilation of the Du Yuming Group who broke through the west of Xuzhou.
In January 1949, the Independent Brigade of the Central China Military Region was renamed the 34th Brigade and transferred to the 12th Column. In February, according to the Central Military Commission’s order to unify the army’s establishment and troop designation, the 12th column of the East China Field Army was renamed the 30th Army of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The army had more than 24,000 people. In April, it participated in the battle of crossing the river and landed in Dangtu, Anhui, and Wuhu, and participated in the pursuit and annihilation of the five multi-military forces fleeing the Kuomintang army south. In May, it participated in the Battle of Shanghai, liberated Fengxian, Nanhui, Chuansha of Pudong, and wiped out more than 8,000 people of the 51st Army of the Kuomintang Army in Bailong Port; and cooperated with the comrades to conquer Gaoqiao and cut off the Kuomintang Army's escape to the east. After the liberation of Shanghai, it served as a security guard in Songhu.
On January 16, 1950, the East China Military Region decided that the 30th Army Headquarters should be transferred to the Navy, and its 88th Division (withdrawn in 1951) should be returned to the 26th Army. The 89th Division was reorganized as the 1st Brigade of Paratroopers, then the 1st Division of the Airborne, and in 1961 it was changed to the 43rd Division of the Airborne. The 90th Division was returned to the 27th Army. It was cancelled in 1951, and the 4th Air Brigade Hybrid Brigade was formed. The division and some troops were transferred to the Navy.
