YOS is a non-self-propelled oil storage barge, 110 foot by 34 foot, built for transporting and disposal of deposited sludge removed from tanks of ships by a Sludge Removal Barge (YSR). Sludge is pumped from tanks of ships to the YOS by a YSR which is equipped with all machinery, equipment, etc., necessary to perform this operation.
Sludge is removed from the YOS at a dumping site by an installed diesel driven sludge pump. Steam coils are provided in the sludge tanks to maintain the sludge in a fluid state. Alternate use of barge is for general storage of oil.
Craft is capable of being towed on an ocean voyage for delivery to an overseas base.
