YFB - Ferry Boat
The YFB is a Ferry Boat that is self-propelled and used to transport personnel, vehicles and equipment across rivers and harbors in areas where road or bridge support is not available.
ADMINISTRATIVE DATA
In 1997 the Navy operated four ferry boats. YFBs 83, 87, 92 and 93.
YFB 83 and 87 are located in Hawaii and are used to shuttle personnel and equipment between Ford Island and the Mainland.
YFB 92 and 93 are located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and shuttle personnel and equipment between the Leeward Point and the Windward Point.
CRAFT IDENTIFICATION DATA: YFB-83
YFB-83 was built as a ferry boat by the John H. Mathis Co. of Camden, N.J. She was completed in April 1949, and was named "Wa'aHele Honua" which means "A CANOE THAT TRAVELS ON LAND". She is capable of ferrying 135 tons of cargo.

Main Generator: General Electric, Model 29G979 which produces 350 kw, 1400 amps, 450 volts at 450rpm.
Main Motor: General Electric, type 16547 which produces 400 Horse Power at 900 rpm while using 250 volts and 1300 amps.
Main Reduction Gear: Farrel, 3 to 1, single reduction
Propeller: 4 Blade

CRAFT IDENTIFICATION DATA: YFB-87
YFB-87 was built as a ferry boat by Western Boat of Tacoma, WA. She was completed in May, 1970 and christened "Moko Holo Hele" which means "SHIP THAT GOES BACK AND FORTH". Fully loaded, she will displace 773 tons. She is operated from either end with independent propulsion plants.

YFB-92 and 93 were built by Bender Shipbuilding and Repair, Mobile, Alabama and delivered in 1994 to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They are operated from either end and have two independent propulsion and steering systems They are capable of transporting fifteen automobiles or two tractor trailer trucks plus forty seated passengers.
