SS-570 / SSK-1 Barracuda

The Barracuda (SS-570) class originated from Project Kayo which was to explore the feasability of diesel electric hunter killer submarines designed for ASW operations using low-frequency bow sonars. These were reclassified SSK-1 thru 3. Designed around the BQR-4 passive array sonar, these submarines were built 1949-52. In fleet use, they were found to have very good convergence zone detection ranges against snorkeling submarines but were slow (13 knots surfaced, 8.5 knots submerged) and short ranged limiting their usage. Resultantly, they were out of service by the late 1950s and stricken in 1965.
