SS-576 Darter

Darter (SS-576) was authorized in FY1954, laid down by Electric Boat the same year and commissioned in October 1956. These submarines had a test depth of 700 feet, considerably improved over the preceding Sailfish (SS-572) class. She was a direct descendant of the Tang (SS-563) class which commissioned 1951-52. She was withdrawn from service in 1989 and sunk as a target by Tautog (SSN-639) off Pearl Harbor on 7 January 1992.
