CM-8 Keokuk
Keokuk was laid down 1914 as SS Henry M. Flagler at William Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia, PA. She was renamed Columbia Heights in 1940. Acquired by the Navy on 28 July 1941, she was classified as a Net Layer AN-5 and named Keokuk. Commissioned USS Keokuk (AN-5) on 28 February 1942, she was reclassified as a Mine Layer CM-8 on 18 May 1942, and reclassified as a Net Cargo Ship AKN-4 in November 1943.
The similar though not identical Shawmut was laid down in 1916 by the William Cramp and Sons Shipbuilding Co., Philadelphia, PA as SS Joseph R. Parrott. She was aquired by the Navy on 8 June 1942 and renamed Salem (CM 11) and converted to a Mine Layer. Commissioned as USS Salem (CM-11) on 9 August 1942, she was renamed Shawmut 15 August 1945.
The generally similar SS Estrada Palma -- a car ferry built in 1920 by William Cramp & Sons at Philadelphia, Pa. -- was acquired by the Navy on 15 June 1942, renamed Weehawken on 18 July 1942, converted to a minelayer by the Bethlehem Steel Co. at Hoboken, N.J., designated CM-12; and commissioned on 30 September 1942.
