AD-11 Altair

This class was authorized two 3-inch guns at time of purchase but these were never installed. These were American merchants constructed for the United States Shipping Board (USSB) by Skinner & Eddy Corporation, Seattle WA during 1918-19. By Executive Order on 29 Oct 1921 these three merchants (Edisto, Edgewood, and Edgecombe) were transferred to the U.S. Navy. They became Altair (AD-11), Denebola (AD-12), and Rigel (AD-13), commissioning in 1921-22. Each saw service during World War II and were transferred to the Maritime Administration for disposal in 1946.
