M1042 HMMWV Shelter Carrier With Winch
The M1037 and M1042 HMMWVs were Shelter Carrier configurations of the HMMWV family. The vehicles were equipped with basic armor and provided the capability to secure and transport the S-250 electrical equipment shelter with a total payload (including crew) of 3,600 pounds (1,634 kilograms). The basic difference between the M1042 and the M1037 is that the M1042 is fitted with an 8,000 pound capacity electric winch on the front bumper. The winch feature affected vehicle length, weight, shipping dimensions and approach angle and could be installed on any M1037 to convert it to an M1042. The feature permited recovery operations of similar vehicles.
Fully-loaded M1042 shelter carriers could climb road grades as steep as 60 percent (31 degrees) and traverse a side slope of up to 40 percent (22 degrees). The vehicles ford hard bottom water crossings up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) without a deepwater fording kit and 60 inches (152 centimeters) with the kit.
No variant of the M1042 with the A1 series modifications was also produced. The M1097A2 Heavy HMMWV was intended to replace M1037 and M1042 shelter carriers.
