The Effects of Posture, Body Armor and Other Equipment on Rifleman Lethality Kramlich, Gary R., II - ADA435486 - NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA -- Master's thesis - JUN 2005 - How does body armor and posture affect Soldier marksmanship? The Interceptor Body Armor (IBA) has significantly improved Soldier combat survivability, but in what ways does it change rifleman lethality? The study shows that for targets closer than 150 meters, Soldiers shot better while wearing body armor than they did without. Body armor had a negative effect for targets farther than 200 meters, and this could significantly impact the employment of the Squad Designated Marksman. The study also shows that the kneeling posture is an effective technique and recommends standardized training on this method of firing.

"Transforming Defense Basic Research Strategy" By Augustus W. Fountain III Parameters Winter 2004-2005- "The US armed forces currently enjoy an unprecedented level of technological superiority across the full spectrum of military threats. These advances were primarily funded through US government and Department of Defense support of basic science and technology throughout the 50 years of relative peace experienced during the Cold War...While today’s technological edge allows us to dominate the broad spectrum of conflict and win with relatively few casualties, maintaining a technological edge has become a key component of the vision to transform the US joint forces by relying on the development and fielding of high-technology weapons that enable a smaller force to be more effective."
