  • IVORY COAST VOA 07 Nov 2004 -- Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo has appealed for calm after two days of anti-French looting and attacks by his supporters, while French troops have gained control of strategic areas of the commercial capital, Abidjan. This comes after French forces retaliated for a deadly raid on one of its bases in the divided country.
  • COTE D IVOIRE: Militants rampage in Abidjan, foreigners airlifted from homes IRIN 07 Nov 2004 -- Militant supporters of President Laurent Gbagbo rampaged through Abidjan's streets overnight, looting and burning French homes, schools and businesses and forcing France's military to airlift more than 150 foreigners to safety and send in troops to restore calm.
  • ARAFAT / HEALTH VOA 07 Nov 2004 -- Senior Palestinian officials are flying to Paris to consult with doctors on the health of the ailing Yasser Arafat, who went there for medical care in late October. Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Sha'ath says Mr. Arafat is in stable condition, in what he calls a "reversible" coma.
  • FRANCE/IVORY COAST VOA 07 Nov 2004 -- France dispatched another 600 troops Sunday to help calm the volatile situation in the Ivory Coast, where French forces, deployed to enforce a shaky cease-fire, and ordinary civilians have been the targets of violence.
  • IVORY COAST/FIGHTING VOA 07 Nov 2004 -- Supporters of President Laurent Gbagbo say he is under attack by France to resign, but they will defend him. Protests against French interests continue one day after French troops neutralized much of Ivory Coast's military, in response to an attack on French troops.

  • THAILAND VIOLENCE / APEC VOA 07 Nov 2004 -- Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will not attend this month's Asia-Pacific economic leaders summit in Chile, citing flaring violence in mostly Muslim southern Thailand.

  • MACEDONIA/REFERENDUM VOA 07 Nov 2004 -- Macedonians are voting in a referendum on whether to scale back autonomy for the Albanian minority granted under an internationally mediated peace accord. Macedonia's government, the European Union, and the United States are urging a boycott of the vote, fearing the measure to restrict Albanian rights could undermine stability.
