  • IRAQ WRAP VOA 30 Aug 2004 -- Iraq's interim government has been talking with Sunni Muslim and tribal leaders in the western cities of Fallujah and Ramadi in a bid to end insurgencies there. The peace agreement that ended firebrand Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's uprising against Iraqi and U.S. forces in Najaf still holds, and Mr. al-Sadr now is calling on supporters elsewhere in Iraq to stop fighting, too.
  • Sudan: Darfur Crisis Highlights Struggle Over Genocide, Intervention RFE/RL 30 Aug 2004 -- Ten years after the Rwanda genocide, human rights watchdogs are concerned that history is repeating itself in Sudan. Despite months of reports about atrocities committed against civilians in the western region of Darfur, the UN Security Council has so far been unwilling to authorize an intervention to stop the violence, responsible for the world's worst current humanitarian crisis. This is in part because of a lack of consensus over whether genocide is occurring. Rights experts say international action is needed, regardless of how the situation is defined.

  • Afghanistan: Deadly Explosions Raise Fears About Security Ahead Of Vote RFE/RL 30 Aug 2004 -- The Taliban is claiming responsibility for a car bomb in Kabul yesterday that killed at least nine people -- three Afghans, three Americans, and three Nepalese. The bomb was detonated in front of the offices of the U.S.-based private security firm DynCorp -- a company that has contracts to train officers for the Afghan National Police and to provide security for Afghan Transitional Administration Chairman Hamid Karzai. The attack came just hours after an explosion at a religious school in the country's southeastern Paktiya Province killed eight Afghan children and at least one adult.

  • AFGHANISTAN/BLAST AFTERMATH VOA 30 Aug 2004 -- Afghanistan's Taleban militia has claimed responsibility for Sunday's bomb attack in Kabul, which killed at least nine people. The Taleban has promised more such attacks before the country's presidential elections. U.S. and Afghan officials are jointly investigating the attack.
