  • U.S. Soldier Killed in Explosion; Marines, Insurgents Fight in Fallujah AFPS 01 Aug 2004 -- One American soldier with the Army's 1st Infantry Division was killed and two others were injured when a remotely detonated improvised explosive device struck their patrol, near Samarra, Iraq, around 12:30 p.m. today.
  • INSURGENTS ATTACK CONVOYS NORTHEAST OF FALLUJAH CENTCOM 01 Aug 2004 -- Fighting in Fallujah continued into the early morning hours Sunday, when three Multi-National Force-Iraq convoys traveling outside the northeast portion of the city were repeatedly attacked by anti-Iraqi forces.
  • CAR BOMB KILLS 5 IRAQIS, WOUNDS MORE THAN 40 CENTCOM 01 Aug 2004 -- Five Iraqis, including two police officers were killed and more than 40 were wounded when a car bomb exploded outside of the Somer Police Station in southeastern Mosul during a morning shift change around 8:15 a.m. today.

  • 11th MEU TAKES CONTROL OF AN NAJAF, AL QADISIYAH CENTCOM 01 Aug 2004 -- The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit assumed operational control of the An Najaf and Al Qadisiyah provinces from the U.S. Army during a ceremony here July 31.
  • MARINES REPEL INSURGENT ATTACK NEAR FALLUJAH CENTCOM 01 Aug 2004 -- Anti-Iraqi forces repeatedly attacked a position held by Marines of the I Marine Expeditionary Force near Fallujah Saturday. The I MEF personnel manning the position took no casualties.
  • Iraqi Insurgents Target Churches In Bomb Attacks RFE/RL 01 Aug 2004 -- A series of bomb blasts occurred outside of five Christian churches in Iraq today, causing deaths and injuries.
  • IRAQ / CHURCH BOMBINGS VOA 01 Aug 2004 -- A nearly simultaneous series of car bombings has hit churches in two Iraqi cities. Officials say at least four churches were attacked in Baghdad and one in the northern city of Mosul. Casualty figures are still coming in, but it looks like the death toll will be significant. It is the first time that Iraq's Christian minority has been specifically targeted in the 15-month insurgency.

  • PALESTINIANS/POLITICS VOA 01 Aug 2004 -- Supporters of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat disrupted a meeting of Palestinian politicians seeking reforms of the Palestinian Authority, firing guns in the air. The incident marks a spread in Palestinian infighting.
