  • BUSH/PUTIN O'NITER VOA 31 May 2003 -- President Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to try and invigorate relations between their two countries following weeks of strong disagreement over the U-S-led war in Iraq. The two leaders will hold a brief meeting Sunday in St. Petersburg, before heading to France for a summit of the G-8.
  • BURMA/SUU KYI ARREST VOA 31 May 2003 -- The military government in Burma says it has placed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and more than a dozen members of her party in "protective custody" in the northern part of the country. The government says the detentions follow clashes in which four people were reportedly killed and scores were wounded.
  • BUSH - POLAND VOA 31 May 2003 -- President Bush says it is time for the United States and Europe to put differences aside, and come together in the defense of liberty. He spoke in Krakow, Poland - - the first stop on a weeklong tour of Europe and the Middle East.
  • ASIA/SARS VOA 31 May 2003 -- Residents in several countries across Asia are hopeful amid indications that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in the region is on the decline. But officials in China, Taiwan and Singapore remain on guard against a recurrence of the disease.
  • G-8 SUMMIT/SCENESETTER VOA 31 May 2003 -- Leaders of the seven major industrialized countries and Russia, known as the Group of Eight, converge Sunday on the French alpine resort of Evian to discuss international security threats and the sorry state of the global economy. But the main focus of the meeting will be on mending ties strained by the U-S- led invasion of Iraq, which split the G-8 into two camps.
  • RUSSIA/E-U/PUTIN VOA 31 May 2003 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and European leaders are pledging to expand their strategic partnership on the basis of one Europe for all.
  • TOGO/ELECTIONS VOA 31 May 2003 -- Main opposition leaders in Togo are rejecting an offer to join a national unity government. The offer was made ahead of Sunday's presidential election by President Gnassingbe Eyadema, Africa's longest ruling leader.
