- USFK FORCE ENHANCEMENT INITIATIVES US Forces Korea Release 31 May 2003-- Gen. Leon J. LaPorte, Commander United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, U.S. Forces Korea, met with Cho, Young-kil, Minister of National Defense and Gen. Kim, Jong Hwan, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to discuss future force enhancements for U.S. Forces in Korea.
- SOFA JOINT COMMITTEE SPECIAL MEETING CONVENED TO ANNOUNCE ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO IMPROVE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SOFA US Forces Korea Release 31 May 2003-- The Special Meeting for the SOFA Joint Committee was held at the Bilateral Conference Room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 30 May 2003. During this meeting, both the ROK and the US representatives evaluated the positive accomplishments that have been made so far to improve the implementation of SOFA since the deaths of the two girls last year and checked the progress of implementation so that measures agreed upon by the two sides can be executed without failure.

- Rice Says U.S. Desires to Spread Freedom, Make World More Secure Washington File 31 May 2003 -- National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, in an interview in Washington with foreign print journalists May 29, on the eve of President Bush's departure on a trip to Europe and the Middle East, said the United States bears "a disproportionate responsibility" for the security of the international community, and U.S. actions in Iraq, Afghanistan and in the war on terror are motivated by the desire "to make the world more secure" and to try to spread freedom.

- BUSH/PUTIN O'NITER VOA 31 May 2003 -- President Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to try and invigorate relations between their two countries following weeks of strong disagreement over the U-S-led war in Iraq. The two leaders will hold a brief meeting Sunday in St. Petersburg, before heading to France for a summit of the G-8.
- BURMA/SUU KYI ARREST VOA 31 May 2003 -- The military government in Burma says it has placed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and more than a dozen members of her party in "protective custody" in the northern part of the country. The government says the detentions follow clashes in which four people were reportedly killed and scores were wounded.

- TOGO/ELECTIONS VOA 31 May 2003 -- Main opposition leaders in Togo are rejecting an offer to join a national unity government. The offer was made ahead of Sunday's presidential election by President Gnassingbe Eyadema, Africa's longest ruling leader.
