39th Flying Training Squadron [39th FTS]

The 39th Flying Training Squadron activated on April 2, 2001 at Moody AFB, GA. It is the first reserve squadron to be stationed at Moody AFB.

At its full complement, the 39th FTS is scheduled to have 20 full time members and 40 traditional reservists (part time). The 39th FTS's reservists will work side-by-side with their active-duty partners and tie right into the group's mission of teaching student pilots in the "Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals" and "Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training" courses.

As of January 2001, the 39th FTS was projected to eventually have about 60 Reserve pilots.

The mission of the 39th FTS is to augment the 3rd FTS in conducting initial pilot training and the 479th Flying Training Group in conducting Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals.

It is also tasked with training and providing a reserve of experienced instructor pilots to augment the Air Education and Training Command instructor cadre. During wartime, or in the event of hostilities, it mobilizes to offset the anticipated loss of experienced active duty pilot inputs into AETC's Pilot Instructor Training pipeline.

The 39th FTS will fall under command of the 340th Flying Training Group stationed at Randolph AFB, TX.
