Reserve Patrol Wing Atlantic [COMRESPATWINGLANT]

Commander Reserve Patrol Wing became the Navy's largest Patrol Wing in January 1999 following the consolidation of the former COMRESPATWINGPAC at Moffett Federal Airfield, CA and COMRESPATWINGLANT at Naval Air Station Norfolk, VA. These two commands were commissioned in October and December 1970, respectively. In a major reorganization of Naval Air Reserve that took place in mid-1970, the Reserve Force Squadron concept created 12 land-based naval reserve patrol squadrons that were structured along the lines of regular Navy squadrons with nearly identical organization and manning levels. The 12/2/1 concept had 12 VP squadrons under two commands, COMFAIRESWINGLANT and COMFAIRESWINGPAC. These two commands came under the control of one central authority, Commander Naval Air Reserve. Naval Reserve Maritime Patrol Aviation (MPA) decreased from thirteen squadrons to nine squadrons by the end of FY 1994. This downsizing paralleled active MPA reductions and left the MPA force with thirteen active and nine Naval Air Reserve squadrons [eight by FY1999].
