Alfa Company, NMCB 17

The Alfa Company of a Seabee battalion is a front line company as well as providing transportation and vehicle support for the battalion.

A typical Alfa company usually consists mainly of Equipment Operators and Construction Mechanics with Machinist Repairmen and Steelworkers for support.

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the automotive, construction and materials handling equipment assigned to the Battalion. Alfa is trained, ready and capable to deploy and provide equipment support for Contingency Construction, Tactical Operations, Disaster Recovery, and Humanitarian Assistance. Alfa Company serves as prime contractor for large earthmoving, grading, excavation, paving, hauling, pile driving, well drilling, heavy lifting, blasting, and demolition projects.

ALFA Company is the Construction Battalion's "motor pool" and backbone. The largest component of the Battalion, we operate and maintain a vast array of construction and light tactical equipment. Our machinery enables the Battalion to complete its mission in both peacetime and in contingency environments. During our drilling weekends we train to not only maintain and operate that equipment, but to defend it and ourselves as well. All of this training will culminate in our deployments to or in response to a contingency Anywhere, Anytime.

The largest and proudest, ALFA Company is comprised mostly of Construction Mechanics (CM) and Equipment Operators (EO). There are also a few Hull Technicians (HT), Construction Electricians (CE), and Machinery Repairmen (MR) to assist with any special needs and Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) Officers to head things up. Sometimes referred to as ALFA Battalion, due to our size, the company enjoys an unparalleled Esprit de Corps.

On the tactical end, all company personnel complete a battery of personal survivability skills. These include marksmanship, weapons training, Chemical, Biological, Radiological avoidance, first aid, communications, tactics, and much more. Most of this training culminates in the Field Exercise (FEX), but will be perpetuated throughout the small tactical exercises.

Also new this year is preparation for Maritime Preposition Force (MPF) contingencies. MPF places Battalion equipment on ships that are forward deployed. If a contingency situation arose, ALFA Company would be tasked with preparing the equipment for on-loading prior to the ships arrival and then off-loading the equipment upon arrival.

People are the most valuable part of any organization and ALFA Company is no exception. We'll rely on the expertise and training of our key personnel to complete our mission. As the backbone of the Battalion we're counted on to get the job done and we will never let our fellow Seabees or country down.
