LSD-37 Landing Ship Departments
Deck Department
The Deck Department is responsible for all external operations involving the ship. While underway the Deck Department personnel do everything from physically steering the ship, to manning all the stations for Amphibious Operations. While inport, the Deck Department is responsible for the ships overall appearance and preservation. They are responsible for operating the Ships massive cranes and boats in addition to ensuring safe sea and anchor details.
Engineering Department
The Engineering Department is responsible for getting the ship to and from anywhere the National Command Authority deems necessary. Additionally, along with three Propulsion Divisions, the Engineers are responsible for ALL the equipment used throughout the ship not assigned to the Operations Department. Everything from the anchor windlass mechanism to the ovens used in the Ship' galley. The Engineering Department is made up of Machinist Mates, Enginemen, Hull Technicians, Damage Controlmen, Electricians and Interior Communications Electricians.
Navigation Department
The Navigation Department is responsible for many things. While underway, the Ships Quartermasters are responsible for the safe passage of the ship. They are charged with keeping strict records of orders involving Navigation, as well as keeping track of where the ship is going. The Navigation Department has a two-fold responsibility. The second set of responsibilities include the Ships Administrative and Personnel issues, as well as the Master-at-Arms force and Legal Office. The Navigation Department is made up of Quartermasters, Personnelman, Yeoman and Master-at-Arms.
Operations Department
The Shipss Operations Department is the eyes, ears and voice of the ship Several Divisions make up the Department including OC, OE, OI and OW. These Divisions include Radiomen, Signalmen, Operations Specialists, Electronic Technicians, Electronic Warefare Technicians and Fire Controlmen. They are responsible for maintaining, operating and repairing all of the various electronic equipment including the Ships radars, communications equipment and computers.
Supply Department
The Ships Supply Department is responsible for many things. In addition to providing repair parts and a budget for consumables, the Supply Department personnel are charged with maintaining the Ships store, the Barber Shop, the Post Office, The Disbursing Office, the laudry services and also feeding as many as six hundred people, 3 times a day ! Needless to say, they are busy all the time. The Supply Department is made up of Ships Servicemen, Disbursing Clerks, Store Keepers and Mess Management Specialists.
