891st Engineer Battalion
Prior to the hand-over of the Panama Canal and the removal of U. S. military presence on December 1, 1999, the 891st Engineer Battalion, Kansas Army National Guard (KSARNG) was a frequent contributor to improvement to facilities in Panama. The unit constructed and renovated schools, built roads, constructed concrete drainage systems, installed plumbing and electrical systems, installed new roofs and constructed loading docks for many years, while honing its MOS skills and completing cross-training.
The 891st also rotated in and out for a four month period in 1995, participating in Fuertes Caminos '95.
With stop-overs through Panama to their training destination and/or coordination by U.S. Southern Command, the 891st conducted training in Belize (1994, 1995 +) and Costa Rica (1993).
In August 1999, Detachment 1, Company B, 891st Engineer Battalion, provided water for 12-13 families when a motor on a water pump in the rural water system of Dearing, KS, burned out. The unit brought a water trailer of potable water for the needs of area citizens. The trailer was refilled until water was again available through the rural water district.
