7th Battalion (General Support), 158th Aviation Regiment
"Challange"
The mission of the 7th Battalion (General Support), 158th Aviation Regiment is to, on order, mobilize to conduct continuous heavy-lift helicopter movement of troops, supplies and equipment. In peacetime, the Battalion might provide support to organizations and units as diverse as the Office of the President of the United States to III Corps to National Geographic. The Battalion is headquartered at Fort Hood, Texas with units in Texas, Colorado, Kansas and California.
The 7th Battalion (General Support), 158th Aviation Regiment was first constituted on 16 September 1987 in the Army Reserve as the 7th Battalion, 158th Aviation. Company C was concurrently allotted to the Regular Army and activated in Germany. The rest of the Battalion, less Company C, was activated on 16 September 1988 at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.
The Battalion was ordered into active military service (less Company C) on 27 December 1990 at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. 7-158th Aviation served in Operation Desert Storm at the King Khalid Military City and in a forward capacity at the Kuwait International Airport. The Battalion released from active military service on 17 June 1991 and reverted to reserve status.
The Battalion was inactivated (less Company C) on 1 September 1995 at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Company C was inactivated on 15 October 1997 in Germany and was concurrently withdrawn from the Regular Army and allotted to the Army Reserve. The Battalion's UH-60 helicopters were subsequently transferred to the Army National Guard.
The Battalion was reactivated on 16 October 1999 at Fort Hood, Texas. The Battalion's A Company was split between Fort Hood and Fort Carson, Colorado.
In February 2005, the Battalion's Headquarters and Headquarters Company was mobilized and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. The Battalion was redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 7th Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment. Prior to this date, the term "Regiment" was not officially in the unit designation.
