6th Military Intelligence Bn
The 6th BN (MI), 98th DIV (IT) originated in 1978 when a small cadre of instructors and administrative personnel from the 99th ASA (Army Security Agency) Co., Fort Meade, MD, decided Fort Devens would be an ideal place for Reserve Training in Military Intelligence. The 505th ASA BN, located at Fort Devens, actively developed lesson plans and programs of instruction with an emphasis on intelligence support to tactical operations. By 1980, students from across the country were accepted into MOS acquisition courses, particularly the communication security custodian training.
Under the direction of the First United States Army, the school became known as the First ITAAS (Intelligence Training Army Area School). Functional courses such as Electronic Warfare for Officers, Morse Code Operators, Radar Signals, Voice Interceptor, and Traffic Analyst were the primary courses offered. At that time, the unit was quite small and the instructors were members of other troop units. The training provided was meaningful and brought "real world" experience to the reserve soldier. It was given a "high priority" training mission by the National Security Agency.
In the mid-1980's, when the "Total Army Concept" was adopted, the supervision of the First ITAAS came under the Active Duty Component. By the end of 1987, the ITAAS had become a full troop program unit. From the original six officers and four enlisted soldiers, the unit grew to approximately one hundred soldiers.
In October 1991, the ITAAS changed to the First Reserve Forces Intelligence School (RFIS) under the command of the 94th Army Reserve Command (ARCOM). As the need for Reserve training grew, so did the requirements of the school to provide necessary programs of instruction. For the first time, additional courses included foreign language refresher training. More training sites were set up by establishing mobile training teams and satellite locations. These changes allowed for an increase in enrollment. The school subsequently graduated 442 students from four training sites. In 1994, the first RFIS provided training overseas in Germany, Italy, and Turkey.
By the Spring of 1995, the school was accredited by the United States Army Intelligence Center and School located at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. At this time student enrollment had increased to over 600 soldiers. Courses were taught from nine different mobile training sites. A new language Immersion Program was offered for the first time. The students consisted of soldiers from all branches of the Department of Defense. This included the Reserve Component, the Active Component, and civilian DOD personnel. Also in 1995 we were certified as the only Reserve school to teach the DOD Strategic Debriefer Course.
In Training Year 1996 the First RFIS was reorganized under the operational control of the 98th Division (IT) head quartered in Rochester, New York. Once again the unit changed its designation and was reactivated as the 6th Battalion (MI), 98th Regiment, 3rd Brigade.
In 1998, the 6th Battalion again was re-inspected by the Proponent. The unit passed a rigorous certification program and became accredited under the Total Army School System. The unit goal to provide reserve forces the best training possible continue to be met in outstanding fashion by the soldiers of the 6th BN (MI).
