687th Quartermaster Battalion (S&S)
The 687th Quartermaster Battalion (S&S) provides command and control of assigned and attached direct support or general support supply and service units. On order, it mobilizes and deploys to assigned theater of operation and plan, provide and direct supply and services support and operations to all non-divisional units operating in or passing through our secured area of operation. On order, assist with defense of base cluster.
The Army Reserve unit in Decatur -- the 687th Quartermaster Battalion -- was put on a high security alert for 72 hours following the September 11th terrorist attacks. The reserve units were at "Force Protection Condition," the highest possible threat level -- basically lock all your doors and keep personnel in here 24 hours a day. The battalion headquarters detachment has 75 full- or part-time soldiers associated with it.
