551st Signal Battalion
As of late January 2002, the mission of the 551st Signal Battalion was to transform basically trained soldiers (B & D Co), who live by the seven Army values, into highly motivated, self-disicplined, physically fit,and technically knowledgeable Signal Soldiers.
The unit provides consolidated billeting, management, and values driven training of inactive IET and Non-IET soldiers assigned to C Co.
It also is tasked with providing command, control, training, administration and logistical support to personnel assigned to HQs&A Company which includes Directorates, special staffs, and other assigned/attached personnel located at Fort Gordon.
The 551st Signal Battalion was constituted on 10 December 1941 in the Army of the United States as the 551st Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion, Separate. It activated on 15 December 1941 at Fort Dix, NJ. The unit was redesignated on 12 December 1942 as the 551st Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion. It inactivated on 1 February 1946 in the Philippine Islands.
It was redesignated 23 September 1986 as the 551st Signal Battalion and allotted to Regular Army; Headquarters concurrently transferred to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command and organized at Fort Gordon, GA.
Transformation which took place on 10 August 2001 placed the 551st Signal Battalion under the 15th Regimental Signal Brigade; training 74B/C/G IET & Non-IET soldiers and effective 25 October 2001, training 31P IET & Non-IET soldiers. The unit also was to have the mission of the inactive soldiers throughout the Brigade.
