498th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion
498th Corps Support Battalion (Provisional)

The mission of the 498th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is to provide responsive and flexible logistics support in order to generate and sustain combat power across the spectrum of conflict. The Battalion, on order, supports non-combatant evacuation and reception, staging, onward movement and integration.

The 498th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion was first constituted on 1 May 1936 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 98th Quartermaster Battalion. The unit was activated on 25 July 1942 at Camp Swift, Texas, as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 98th Quartermaster Bakery Battalion. The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 26 September 1943 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 98th Quartermaster Battalion. During the Second World War, the unit served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, participating in 2 campaigns: New Guinea and Luzon. The unit served as part of US occupation forces in Japan and it was reorganized and redesignated on 29 April 1947 as the 98th Quartermaster Service Battalion before being inactivated on 25 January 1950 in Japan.

The Battalion was reactivated on 17 October 1950 in Korea. It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 December 1951 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 98th Quartermaster Battalion. The Battalion participated in 8 campaigns of the Korean War: UN Offensive, CCF Intervention, First UN Counteroffensive, CCF Spring Offensive, UN Summer-Fall Offensive, Second Korean Winter, Korea Summer-Fall 1952, Third Korean Winter, and Korea Summer 1953.

After serving in Korea, the Battalion returned to the United States and was inactivated on 10 December 1957 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. It was briefly active from 21 October 1961 to 6 July 1962, based at at Fort Lee, Virginia. The unit was reactivated on 20 June 1963 at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The Battalion was deployed to Vietnam, where it was converted, reorganized, and redesignated on 20 July 1966 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 98th Supply and Service Battalion. The Battalion was inactivated on 1 September 1968 in Vietnam, having participated in 7 campaigns: Defense, Counteroffensive, Counteroffensive Phase II, Counteroffensive Phase III, Tet Counteroffensive, Counteroffensive Phase IV, Counteroffensive Phase V.

The battalion was redesignated on 10 January 1975 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 498th Support Battalion, and activated at Fort Hood, Texas. It was subsequently relocated to Germany. The Battalino deployed to Southwest Asia as part of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990-1991, participating in the Defense of Saudi Arabia, Liberation and Defense of Kuwait, and Cease-Fire campaigns. The Battalion subsequently returned to Germany, where it was inactivated on 15 September 1992.

The colors and lineage of the 227th Maintenance Battalion were returned to the United States on 15 September 1999. At that time, the unit was reflagged as the 498th Corps Support Battalion (Provisional). Since 1971, a support battalion had served continuously in the Republic of Korea, fulfilling an important part in supporting the Area II community. The reflagging aligned the unit's command and control structure to the subordinate units it managed. Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 498th Support Battalion was formally activated on 16 October 2003 in Korea and the provisional nomenclature dropped.

As of 2005, the 498th Corps Support Battalion, headquartered in Seoul, was a subordinate command of the 501st Corps Support Group, and consisted of a headquarters and headquarters Company, 2 maintenance companies, 2 supply companies and one medium truck company. Its missions included supply operation and accountability, direct support maintenance and medium truck transportation.

The 498th Corps Support Battalion's mission was to provide command and control, administrative, training and life support for Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 498th Corps Support Battalion. It also included providing combat service support to non-divisional forward deployed units in the combat zone of korea and backup direct support combat service support to the 2nd infantry division. Additionally, it would provide line haul transportation support to the entire theater and, on order, conduct noncombatant evacuation operations.

In December 2005, the 19th Theater Support Command was reorganized and redesiganted as the 19th Expeditionary Support Command. As part of this reorganization, the 501st Corps Support Group was also reorganized and redesignated as the 501st Sustainment Brigade. The 3 Area Support Commands were inactivated. The 498th Corps Support Battalion remained assigned to the new 501st Sustainment Brigade, but its Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment was reorganized and redesignated on 17 October 2006 as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 498th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion reflecting the various reorganizations in roles and missions of support units in Korea. This was a product of both the transformation of the US Army to the new modular force structure and the drawdown of US forces in Korea.
