490th Civil Affairs Battalion

The distinctive unit insignia for the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion was approved on 27 May 1993, consisting of a shield blazoned: Per saltire Purpure and Argent, a bordure counterchanged, overall a torch Or. Attached below the shield a purple scroll inscribed "PROGRESS THROUGH UNITY" in gold. Purple and white are the colors traditionally associated with Civil Affairs organizations. Gold is emblematic of honor and achievement. The saltire and counterchanged colors of the shield reflect strength and cooperation. The border highlights unity and the integration of the civil and military mission of the unit. The stylized torch of liberty, adapted from the Civil Affairs insignia of branch, symbolizes the enlightenment, progress and spirit of democracy.
