46th Corps Support Group (Airborne)
The 46th Corps Support Group (Airborne) provides DS/GS Supply, Service, and Maintenance Support to all non-divisional units, reinforcing support to the 82nd Airborne Division, and backup DS/GS Support to divisional units assigned or attached to the XVIII Airborne Corps during contingency operations.
The 46th Corps Support Group traces its roots back to 1936, when it was constituted as the 46th Quartermaster Truck Regiment and activated in 1942 at Camp San Luis Obispo, CA. During World War II, the unit supported U.S. Forces in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Central Europe and finally Germany. For its outstanding service, the unit was awarded five Campaign Streamers.
The 46th Corps Support Group was dormant form 1946 until 1966, when it was reformed at Fort Devens as the 46th Direct Support Group. In the Spring of 1972, the Group moved to Fort Bragg to form the core of the 12th Brigade, and later the 1st Corps Support Command. A major reorganization of the COSCOM in December 1972 resulted in the Group's new role as manager of maintenance, supply and field service support for the XVIII Airborne Corps. In March 1987, the 46th Corps Support Group was further reorganized into a multifunctional, Corps Support Group giving it a full range of Combat Service Support.
The 46th Corps Support participated in numerous operation to include Operation Hawkeye, where the 46th Corps Support Group deployed to Saint Croix, in the Virgin Island to provide Humanitarian Relief after Hurricane Hugo. The 46th Corps Support Group later deployed to Panama to support Operation Just Cause, the invasion of Panama.
The Group supported both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, was the first Corps Support Group to cross into Iraq. In support of the Haitian relief effort, the Super Group deployed to support Operation Safe Harbor, at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as the Army Forces Command Element.
In September 1994, the Group provided critical logistical supplies and service throughout the country including water purification, fuel distribution, and the receipt, distribution and storage of all classes of supply. During 1995 and 1996, 46th also deployed to support the disaster relief efforts as a result of Hurricane Marilyn on the island of Saint Thomas, and Hurricane Fran on and around Fort Bragg.
