189th Corps Support Battalion (Airborne)

The mission of the 189th Corps Support Battalion (Airborne), is to, on order, deploy by all modes of transportation and provide DS ground maintenance, transportation, class V conventional ammunition, and class IX repair parts on a unit and area basis. Provide class V direct support to the 82nd Airborne Division and multifunctional combat service support to contingency operations as directed.

The 189th Corps Support Battalion (Airborne) was originally constituted on 1 May 1936 as the 55th Quartermaster Regiment (Heavy Maintenance).

The unit was redesignated on 17 May 1943 at the 189th Ordnance Battalion. On 17 October 1944, the 189th participated in the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns of World War II earning the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge and Streamer. It inactivated on 4 July 1945.

Redesignated on 21 July 1966 as the 189th Maintenance Battalion, it reactived on 26 July 1966 at Fort Bragg, NC, as a subordinate unit of the 12th Support Brigade.

In December 1989, the unit participated in Operation JUST CAUSE, Panama. It deployed in September 1990 to Saudi Arabia in support of Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. In September 1992, the unit deployed in response to Hurricane Andrew, Miami, FL.

The unit was redesignated on 16 September 1993 as the 189th Corps Support Battalion. The unit deployed in September 1993 in support of to Operation RESTORE HOPE, Somalia; in September 1994, in support of Operation RESTORE DEMOCRACY, Haiti; in September 1995 to St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands after Hurricane Marilyn; and in September 1996 to conduct relief and clean-up operations for Hurricane Fran.

The battalion has over 900 personnel assigned to it.

The mission of the 8th Ordnance Company is to, on order, deploy the company anywhere in the world by air, sea or land. Provide DS ammunition support to designated XVIII Airborne Corps divisional and nondivisional units in the operational area.

The mission of the 546th Transportation Company is to provide transportation for the local movement of cargo and personnel by light/medium motor transport in support of XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg tenant units. Provides an airborne truck platoon to support the XVIII Airborne Corps assault CP.

The mission of the 659th Maintenance Company is to provide DS maintenance support for automotive, armament, engineer, power generation, communication- electronics, allied trades, recovery and class IX repair parts to selected XVIII Airborne Corps nondivisional units. Provides backup support to the 82nd Airborne Division as directed.
