409th Base Support Battalion
In 2005, an official ceremony in Heidelberg, Germany marked the reflagging of the Installation Management Agency - Europe's Area Support Groups, Base Support Battalions, and Area Support Teams into 21 US Army Garrisons to align with the common US Army installation management structure worldwide, known as Standard Garrison Organization. The 409th Base Support Batalion was inactivated and folded into the 100th Area Support Group, which was reflagged as the US Army Garrison Grafenwöhr.
The 409the Base Support Battalion mission was to provide training support, quality service, deployment support, Reception, Staging and Onward movement, Integration (RSOI), force projection, and Conventional Forces Europe (CFE) support to all US Government Agencies. It would, on order, become placed under the operational control of the Commanding General, 21st Theater Support Command to support deployment operations.
The 409th Base Support Battalion, located in Vilseck, Germany, supported both the Grafenwoehr and Vilseck military communities. A visit to these communities was an opportunity to experience both the old and the new. The local German communities of Grafenwoehr and Vilseck were rich in history and offered many activities and opportunities for the whole family to enjoy.
The 409th Base Support Battalion (Grafenwoehr/Vilseck) was the US Army Europe (USAREUR) winner of the 1995 and 1996 ACOE competition in the large community category and HQDA runner-up in the 1996 ACOE large community category. The Vilseck Area Support Team was incorporated into the 409th Base Support Battalion when their headquarters moved to Vilseck in 1996.
