406th Corps Support Battalion
The mission of the 406th Corps Support Battalion is to Provide Combat Service Support on a Unit and Area Basis within Corps Forward and to Designated Divisional Units.
Supporting Missions include: (1) Plan Logistics Support (2) Relocate CSB to a new Operating Site (3) Establish CSB Area of Operations (4) Provide Logistics Support (5) Defend CSB Assigned Area.
Mission Essential Tasks include: (1) Operate Logistical Support Area of Logistics Operations Center (2) Operate Tactical Support Area of Logistics Operations Center (3) Provide Command and Control (4) Establish Logistics Operation Center and Administrative Areas (5) Operate Base Cluster Operations Center.
The mission of the 301st Quartermaster Company (WATER) is to Conduct Bulk Water Storage and Distribution Activities in Direct Support of the Corps Rear Area or COMMZ. The mission of the 431st Quartermaster Company (PETRL) is to Conduct Bulk Petroleum Storage and Distribution Activities in Direct Support of the Corps Rear Area or COMMZ. The mission of the 401st Transportation Company (PLS) is to Conduct Light to Medium Palletized Transportation Support to designated Divisional Units from Corps Area. The mission of the 952nd Quartermaster Company (PETRL) is to Conduct Bulk Petroleum Storage and Distribution Activities in Direct Support of the Corps Rear Area or COMMZ. The 980th Quartermaster Company Mobilizes and Deploys in the Corps Rear Area or COMMZ to Provide Direct Support Supply for Units Within the Corps Area of Operation.
The Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 175th Ordnance Battalion, was constituted on 22 February 1944. The unit was activated on 10 April 1944 at Camp Howze, Texas. Following activation, the battalion was deployed to the Pacific for service in World War II. The unit was awarded credit for its participation in the Ryukyus Island (Okinawa) Campaign during World War II. Following the war, the battalion was inactivated on 15 February 1946 at Okinawa.
On 22 September 1947, the battalion was redesignated as the 406th Ordnance battalion and allotted to the Organized Reserves (Army Reserve) and assigned to Fifth United Stated Army. On 15 October 1947, the unit was activated at Ann Arbor, Michigan, its current home station. The unit was redesignated as the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 406th Ordnance Battalion (Maintenance and Supply) on 1 October 1952.
In October 1967 the battalion was authorized its own distinctive unit crest. The insignia is crimson and yellow, with a fireball symbolizing the unit's ordnance mission. A Tori gate alludes to the Ryukyus Islands where the unit served in World War II.
In 1968, the battalion was redesignated as the 406th Maintenance Battalion and was assigned the 310th and the 755th Maintenance Companies (Light Equipment). The 221st Ordnance Company (Ammo) (GS) was assigned to the 406th Maintenance Battalion in 1976. In September 1990, the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 406th Maintenance Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 406th Maintenance Battalion.
In September 1995, 406th Maintenance Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 406th Corps Support Battalion. The Headquarters and Headquarters Company was reorganized and redesignated as the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 406th Corps Support Battalion. In September 1995, the 310th became a General Support Maintenance Company, and the former 755th became operational as the 401st Transportation Company (PLS). In September 1995, the 952nd Quartermaster Company and the 980th Quartermaster Company were assigned to the battalion. Additionally, the 221st Ordnance Company (AMMO) was reassigned.
In September 1999, the 310th General Support Maintenance Company in Jackson, MI was inactivated. Additionally, in September 1999, the 301st Quartermaster Company in Grand Rapids, MI and the 431st Quartermaster Company in Lansing, MI were assigned to the battalion.
Units within the battalion have performed Annual Training duty at military installations throughout the world. Some of the training sites for the battalion's units within recent years include: Fort Polk, Louisiana; Fort Knox, Kentucky; Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Fort Pickett, Virginia; Puerto Barrios, Guatemala; Mannheim, Germany; Pirmasens, Germany; Camp Carrol, Korea; and Camp Doha, Kuwait.
Units in the battalion have garnered their share of recognition for outstanding performance. This type of performance is indicative of the pride and esprit de corps within the 406th Corps Support Battalion.
