348th General Hospital

The mission of the 348th General Hospital is to: establish a 476-bed hospital in a communications zone (COMMZ)/theater army area of operations; provide stabilization and specialized and definitive hospitalization for general classes of patients; and serve as the primary conduit for patient evacuation to the continental United States (CONUS).

The 348th General Hospital is assigned to the 8th Medical Brigade during peacetime, and to a medical command or brigade when mobilized for active service. At full strength, the 348th General Hospital provides: hospitalization for up to 476 patients, consisting of 8 wards providing intensive nursing care for up to 96 patients, 16 wards providing intermediate nursing care for up to 320 patients, 1 ward providing neuropsychiatric care for up to 20 patients, and 2 wards providing minimal nursing care for up to 40 patients; surgical capacity based on 8 operating room tables for surgical capacity of 144 operating room table hours per day; consultation services for patients referred from other medical treatment facilities; echelon I combat health support for organic personnel; pharmacy, clinical laboratory, blood banking, radiology services, and nutrition care services; physical and occupational therapy support to patients; medical administrative and logistical services to support work loads; and dental treatment to staff and patients and oral surgery support for military personnel in the immediate area, plus patients referred by area dental units.

Constituted November 1917 in the Regular Army as U.S. Army Base Hospital Number 48 and organized at Metropolitan Hospital, New York City. Ordered into active military service 6 March 1918 at Metropolitan Hospital, and demobilized May 1919 at Camp Upton, New York. Reconstituted July 1923 in the Organized Reserves as General Hospital Number 48 and allotted to the Second Corps Area. Organized 1924-1925 in New York City. Redesignated 29 June 1929 as the 48th General Hospital. Ordered into active military service 1 June 1942 at Camp Rucker, Alabama. Inactivated 14 September 1945 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia. Redesignated 9 September 1947 as the 348th General Hospital and assigned to Second Army. Activated 16 September 1947 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Inactivated 21 August 1950 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Activated 15 June 1952 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Relocated (sometime between 1969 and 1976) to Folsom, Pennsylvania. Reorganized and redesignated 1994 as the 348th General Hospital (Hospital Unit Base) and relocated to Camp Pedricktown, New Jersey.
